Dalaithngu, of the Mandjalpingu clan of the Yolŋu people, was raised in Arnhem land and has been credited as a once-in-a-generation artist who shaped the history of Australian film and Aboriginal representation on screen.

David’s acting career spanned 50 years. His presence and talent changed the way Aboriginal peoples are represented in cinema and grew the audience appetite for authentic First Nations stories.

The depth of his character work, his celebration of language and culture and the dramatic narratives he portrayed alongside industry greats made him one of the best, and most iconic, performers in the Australian arts.

From 7:20pm tonight, NITV will celebrate David’s legacy by broadcasting a dedicated schedule of programming.

At 7:20pm, NITV News will dedicate a special episode to the life of David Dalaithgnu AM. Hosted by Ryan Liddle, the episode will feature NITV’s last interview with Dalaithgnu.

From 7:30pm, audiences will be invited to watch Storm Boy – a story that follows Mike (Greg Rowe), a lonely young boy living in a coastal wilderness with his reclusive father (Peter Cummins). In search of friendship, he encounters Fingerbone Bill (David Dalaithgnu) and the two form a bond in the care of orphaned pelicans. With the wise guidance of Fingerbone Bill, Mike learns of the cycle of life

At 9pm, NITV will air Twelve Canoes, a series of short films that paint a compelling portrait of the people, history, culture and place of the Yolŋu people.

On Friday 3 December, Rabbit Proof Fence will be broadcast at 7:30pm. Based on a true story, the film tells the true story of three Aboriginal girls who are taken from their family in 1931 and sent to Moore River Native Settlement. The girls escape from Moore River and make the arduous nine-week journey home to Jigalong and their families, all along following the titular rabbit-proof fence, followed closely by Moodoo the tracker (David Dalaithgnu).

A curated collection of Dalaithngu’s most iconic films will also be available on SBS On Demand including One Red Blood, Satellite Boy, Ten Canoes, Twelve Canoes, Another Country, Storm Boy, Rabbit Proof Fence and Dalaithgnu’s NAIDOC Award Winner’s Story.

Please join with NITV to honour David Dalaithgnu’s impact and legacy.

NITV will celebrate the life of David Dalaithngu AM with special programming and content available from Tuesday 30 November 2021.
