Weekend Sunrise presenter Matt Doran has denied media reports he was suspended from on-air duties after a train wreck interview with music icon Adele.

Media reports published in The Sunday Telegraph, over the weekend indicated Doran had been suspended for two weeks and severely reprimanded by his employer after filming a “disastrous” interview with Adele ahead of the release of her new album 30.

Doran filmed the interview with Adele earlier this month in London. However, the conversation turned sour after he confessed he hadn’t listened to the full album despite the record company supplying him with a special advanced preview copy.

Speaking to The Australian, Doran confirmed he was mortified by the gaffe:

“When I sat down to interview Adele, I was totally unaware that I’d been emailed a preview of her unreleased album,”

“I have since discovered it was sent to me as an ‘e card’ link, which I somehow missed upon landing in London. It was an oversight but NOT a deliberate snub. This is the most important email I have ever missed.”

TV Blackbox understands Doran travelled to the UK in early November with a Channel 7 producer for the Australian exclusive interview which the network had planned to broadcast in a primetime Sunday night timeslot.

It’s understood Adele’s management Sony Music used its veto powers to block Channel 7 from broadcasting the interview.

“Adele didn’t storm out. In fact, it was the polar opposite.”

“What was meant to be 20 minutes was extended to 29 minutes. The majority of the chat was about the album. I told her: ‘I’ve only had the privilege of hearing Easy on Me, but not the other tracks’.”

Doran returned to presenting the Sunrise program on Saturday after having been missing for the previous two weekends. The presenter denied reports he had been formally suspended as a result of the interview, adding:

“I’m utterly confounded. I’ve implored Sony to release the interview.”

It has been reported Seven invested close to $1 million to secure Australian broadcast rights for the Adele package which included the Doran interview and the Adele One Night Only tv special which featured concert footage and a conversation with Oprah Winfrey.

TV Blackbox has approached Channel 7 for comment.

  1. So just to recap my understanding…

    1. Seven plucks Doran from the obscure Weekend slot into a plumb Prime Time Special, for an extended 20-30 minute interview with the world’s most in demand singer, and at no point does he thump the table asking where his album link is, despite a ming numbing 24 hour long flight ahead?
    2. Then Doran, who’s literal job is making inoffensive small talk, actually tells Adele he hasn’t listened to her album?
    3. On top of that, he does so in front of a room full of stressed out Sony execs, who have their careers riding on this launch, and by the way, own the interview’s copyright?

If I’ve understood correctly, then to coin Jay Leno, another interview who was often disinterested in his celebrity guests, “OK, question No. 1: What the hell were you thinking?”
