CLOSE ENCOUNTERS
No one wants to be frightened going for a swim or a surf, but before diving into the water this summer it’s important to consider an alarming fact. Right now, Australia is riding a growing wave of shark attacks. In the past year, more than half of the deaths caused by shark attacks around the world occurred here. As a result, there is now some extraordinary technology being used to keep us safe. But as Tom Steinfort reports, researchers have also made another surprising discovery. It looks like we’re to blame for the increase in close encounters with sharks.

GOING BACK
With blockbuster film credits like The Lord of the Rings trilogy, legendary movie director Peter Jackson is the master of make believe. But now he also has an incredible truth to tell. He reckons he’s worked out the real reason the world’s biggest band, The Beatles, split up. Locked away in a vault for more than 50 years, Jackson found hours and hours of film featuring John, Paul, George and Ringo recording the last studio album they released, Let It Be. It’s intimate, behind-the-scenes footage of the Fab Four making their famous music, which he has turned into a compelling documentary. But as Jackson explains to Karl Stefanovic, by going back and revisiting 1969 he is also rewriting history.

THE FOLBIGG TAPES
According to the law, Kathleen Folbigg is a murderer. She was convicted in 2003 of killing her four young children and sentenced to 40 years in prison but has always denied the crimes. Now audio tapes obtained by 60 MINUTES reveal extraordinary new insights into the case. Speaking from prison, Folbigg lovingly remembers her two sons and two daughters, and in doing so provides a very different view of a supposed cold-hearted killer. As Tara Brown reports, the recordings could also add weight to calls for Kathleen Folbigg to be pardoned. Already, more than 150 of the world’s leading scientists have signed a petition demanding her immediate release from prison, citing advances in science which they say cast significant doubt on her conviction.
