MOST POPULAR BREAKFAST SHOW FINALISTS

TODAY (Nine)

Do you wake up with Today? Presenters Karl Stefanovic and Ally Langdon sure do after taking over the show in 2020, with Karl returning after a one-year hiatus from 14 years as host.

Joining Karl and Ally when the show kicks off at 5:30am are sports and news presenter Alex Cullen, entertainment presenter Brooke Boney, and weather reporter Tim Davies.

After a few years where Today was dropping in the ratings, 2021 has seen the show gain its footing and make it a tighter battle against Seven’s Sunrise and the ABC’s News Breakfast.

Given its resurgence and quest to one day soon return to number one position, will TV Blackbox readers reward Today with the TV Boxie?

SUNRISE (Seven)

Say ‘hi’ to the cash cow – Sunrise brings longtime presenter David ‘Kochie’ Koch into your home with newly appointed co-host Natalie Barr finally taking the main chair earlier this year (Matt Doran presents instead of Kochie on Friday).

After Sam Armytage departed the program, hosting it alongside Kochie since 2013, the show saw a reshuffle at the desk with Nat moving over as host and Edwina Bartholomew now presenting news. Mark Beretta continues to present sport and Sam Mac still reports on weather.

Like its Nine rivals, Sunrise kicks off at 5:30am, and has led the breakfast ratings battle for the last few years, although on rare occasions this year the show has been beaten by both Today and News Breakfast.

Still hands down set to win in 2021, Sunrise is no doubt one of Australia’s most dominant shows and will be a strong contender at the TV Boxies.

WEEKEND SUNRISE (Seven)

Joining its main show in this TV Boxies category, Weekend Sunrise has also gotten a nod at the inaugural awards.

Monique Wright and Matt Doran host the program, with Sally Bowrey presenting news and sport, and James Tobin reporting on the weather.

Will on of the weekend editions of Australia’s breakfast programming be a surprise winner in the Most Popular Breakfast Show category?

NEWS BREAKFAST (ABC)

Broadcast from 6:00am, News Breakfast is ABC’s match-up against Seven and Nine in the breakfast battle, with Michael Rowland and Lisa Miller at the helm as co-hosts.

Presenting sports is former Australian rules footballer Tony Armstrong, finance is covered by Madeleine Morris and weather is reported on by Nate Byrne.

The show has seen recent success in the breakfast battle, joining in the ranks and sometimes beating both free-to-air offerings, Sunrise and Today.

Recently, TV Blackbox asked readers which breakfast program held the best hosting team (not program), with Michael and Lisa dominating the poll with well over 6,000 votes. Will News Breakfast perhaps take the TV Boxie?

BIG MOB BREKKY (NITV/SBS)

Airing exclusively during NAIDOC week, Big Mob Brekky is Australia’s first all-Indigenous breakfast show, hosted by Shahni Wellington and Ryan Liddle.

Debuting in 2020, the show brought in a third panelist for the 2021 edition which aired from July 5 to July 9, with Tyrone Pynor joining the team.

About joining the show, Tyrone said, “when they announced BMB last year it was the first year they’d done it. It was the first-ever blak, First Nations Breakfast show. So it was sort of a big deal last year. And I wanted to be a part of it somehow.”

Despite such a smaller edition compared to the other finalists, Big Mob Brekky might just take home the TV Boxie on November 28.

It’s time to take your pick in the Most Popular Breakfast Show category. And remember to tune in on November 28 to see who wins at the TV Boxies!
