We’re glued to it. It’s our prime time hit all year round. Let’s look at Reality TV and the SIX finalists (not five) chosen by you to win the coveted TV Boxie.
As we look at all of the TV Boxies categories all month long, today it’s time for your Reality TV fix as we check out the six finalists listed in the Most Popular Reality TV Show category.
Only the three free-to-air networks find themselves nominated in this category which will be presented live with all 21 others on November 28.
MOST POPULAR REALITY TV SHOW FINALISTS
SAS AUSTRALIA (Seven)
Taking its format from the original British version, SAS Australia debuted in 2020 featuring 17 or more celebrities competing against harsh environments in a mock-training course that is designed to replicate a number of elements of the actual SAS selection course.
With Ant Middleton as chief instructor, four celebrities have passed the course over its current two-season run: Nick ‘Honey Badger’ Cummins, Merrick Watts, Sabrina Frederick and Sam Burgess.
While ratings haven’t been blockbuster for Seven, they’re enough to comfortably warrant a third season in 2022, with the show praised for showing celebrities out of their typical glamour comfort, and pushed to their mental and physical limits in some of the brutalist conditions ever seen on Australian TV.
With the show untested at the Logies, SAS Australia could win its first award at the TV Boxies.
LEGO MASTERS AUSTRALIA (Nine)
With three seasons out of the way, Lego Masters Australia has solidified itself as one of the country’s most popular Reality TV formats.
Perhaps it’s the light entertainment and fun energy that separates this series from everything else, but with the duo of Hamish Blake and Ryan ‘The Brickman’ McNaught at the helm, it’s no surprise why it’s a hit with fans.
Lego Masters Australia selects eight teams of two who work to overcome a variety of different Lego-themed challenges, focusing primarily on three criteria; storytelling ability, technical abilities and overall aesthetic.
The winning team takes home $100,000 in prize money, while Nine has a likely chance to take home a TV Boxie with this show.
BIG BROTHER (Seven)
Originally premiering in 2001, the Australian version of Big Brother is one of the only shows in TV history to air across all three free-to-air networks, with Seven taking the reins in 2020.
With a shaken up format from its predecessors, Big Brother now emulates its North American counterparts by emphasising strategy and gameplay between each other as opposed to likability and entertainment for the viewers.
Despite the strategic turn of this now pre-recorded game, the show has seen two popular housemates manage to make it to the end and eventually win over Australia: Chad Hurst in 2020, and Marley Biyendolo in 2021.
In 2022, Big Brother invites some former housemates of years past to return to the new game and take on some first-timers. With this new format boding well for Seven, will it be enough to earn your vote for Popular Reality Tv Show?
THE BLOCK (Nine)
Just after wrapping a monumental 17th season, The Block has been a consistent ratings winner for Nine, and a staple to Australia’s Reality TV scene.
Making host Scott Cam a household name, the show of late features five duos renovating a house before selling it at auction for incredible price tags.
In its most recent season, The Block revisited its Fans vs Faves format from 2014, bringing back two former teams to compete against three new ones. Unlike in the first edition, the Faves reigned supreme when Mitch & Mark won the season, selling their house for $4.04 million and taking home total winnings of $744,444.44.
The Block has been a huge juggernaut in the Reality TV genre, winning five Logies in the equivalent Reality TV category before. With no Logies, it’s on the show to take out the inaugural TV Boxie.
AUSTRALIAN SURVIVOR (10)
As one of 10’s most successful shows every year, Australian Survivor has a cult following of fans who tune in to each season, with 10’s sixth airing earlier this year.
Adapting a format proven popular in the U.S., the show put together a Brains vs Brawn edition, with 24 everyday Aussies battling to become Sole Survivor and win the $500,000 prize.
In a season full of strategic class and epic challenges in the Outback, superfans and Brains tribemates Hayley Leake and George Mladenov managed to go all the way to Day 48, with Leake winning the season in a 7-2 jury vote.
Australian Survivor has picked up three AACTA awards and one Logie, and just might clock up another win at the TV Boxies later this month after a popular 2021 season.
THE VOICE (Seven)
After nine seasons as a flagship show for Nine, Seven snagged the rights to the Australian version of The Voice and rebooted it with a snazzy fast-paced format, featuring superstar coaches Keith Urban, Jess Mauboy, Guy Sebastian and Rita Ora.
The switch to Seven proved to be a hit with viewers, with the 2021 season managing a 1.285 million series average in ratings, becoming one of the most popular shows of the year.
Hosted by Sonia Kruger, Sebastian won the season with his contestant Bella Taylor Smith winning the audience vote and $100,000 in prize money.
With The Voice back with some stellar numbers for Seven, it could be one of the more likely picks to take home the Reality TV Boxie.
With all six finalists each deserving of a TV Boxie, there can only be one ultimate winner. So cast your vote in all of the eligible TV Boxies categories below!
