Adapted from the much-loved quiz show that aired from 2010 – 2012, and inspired by the thousands of audience calls for its return, the first season of Celebrity Letters & Numbers premieres this Saturday on SBS.

Hosted by comedian and Triple J presenter Michael Hing, Celebrity Letters & Numbers will see the return of wordsmith David Astle and numbers expert Lily Serna.

Each episode features three comedic celebrities and a special guest alongside David in Dictionary Corner.

Series One, Episode One: Michael Hing, David Astle, and Lily Serna are joined by celebrity contestants Suren Jayemanne, Jennifer Wong, Merrick Watts and special Dictionary Corner guest Bridie Connell.

Watch as they battle it out for the most unique prize on Australian TV – the highly sought after, priceless, antique collectible of…one single book, from a vintage 1980s encyclopedia collection, generously gifted by Michael Hing’s parents after they cleaned out their garage.

Guests race against the clock as they pit their linguistic and numerical skills against each other.

Celebrity Letters & Numbers premieres Saturday, 2 October at 7.35pm on SBS and On Demand (12 Parts)

  1. What a disappointment the new Celebrity Letters &Numbers program was last night. Corny comedy shots and generally disappointing presentation. I won’t be watching again even though this time slot on Saturday night television in Melbourne is lacking decent viewing for me.
It will be interesting to hear what other people thought.

  2. I didnt see the show when it aired but its a shame that we have to have a dumbed down product by the sound of it.
I always watched Richard Moorcroft as it was entertaining and made you think and I wonder if this show will have the same fate as the local production of Pointless.
Its a real shame that we have to settle for second best in Australia.

  3. I agree. A dumbed down version of a programme I found challenging and rewarding.
One viewing was enough for me. I can’t believe Lily and David (apart from the financial motive) would wish to be involved with this utter tosh!
And as for the “comedian” he’s not even amusing let alone funny.
Give me a break, SBS. Yet another example of content being sacrificed to attract crap advertising. A sad, sad demise of a once exemplary and truly interesting TV channel.

  4. Sorry SBS but Celebrity Letters and Numbers just doesn’t do it for me. Too many ‘celebrities’, too much yackity-yack and self-applause for corny attempts at humour – too little time spent on the actual games coupled with a lack of genuine effort to play them – all in all, disappointing.
I’ve been a big fan of the original, non-celebrity version – of the show’s host, Richard and the talented duo Lily and David (sadly both now only bit-players) and I enjoyed pitting my wits against those of the contestants.
Having sat through last week’s show and barely half of this week’s, by way of compensation I went online to watch one of the original shows. Incidentally I also came across a YouTube compilation of Letters and Numbers Bloopers – now that really had me laughing.
