Whoever said you shouldn’t play with your food, clearly hasn’t visited the MAKING IT AUSTRALIA Barn.
Food, glorious food was the theme of tonight’s challenges and, unfortunately, in the end we bid adieu to Sai-Wai Foo. Her conceptual self-portrait featuring a mould of her own hands melted before the judges’ eyes, along with her hopes in the competition.
The Makers started their next round of challenges with a Together Craft. As Makers paired off, three hours were given to create a classic food pairing costume. This is no ordinary competition, the results were (almost) good enough to eat.
Sai-Wai and Jack presented the iconic Prawn Cocktail, complete with poop chute and an illuminated glittery cocktail glass; Denise and Robert donned champagne and caviar, complete with a mother of pearl serving spoon; but it was Rizaldy and Dan’s take on Fish and Chips – a giant garfish opening up to reveal two fried fillets, and a foam potato, inside containing individually cut French Fries with tomato sauce and vinegar – that impressed the judges and won them the Together Craft, and a patch.
In the Master Craft, the Makers had eight hours to create an evocative self-portrait using only edible items. Simple, right? Wrong.
As if relying on food as materials wasn’t hard enough, George doubled down on the challenge and only used ingredients that start with the letter G: ginger, gummy bears, grapes, gnocchi, gobstoppers and more! Her portrait was so beautifully detailed, that she won her second patch.
However, Dan and Sai-Wai both struggled. Dan attempted to glue together a fruit and veggie portrait using a sugar isomalt, but the temperature in the Barn stopped the glue from setting and it’s all a bit of a bust. Creating a mould to hold her heart and her art, Sai-Wai was devastated when her creation also set and presented an unfinished piece to the judges, which unfortunately was her last.
Next week on Making It Australia, things get MEGA. We head outdoors as Makers are tasked with creating their own backyard oasis.
