An iconic song and a cheeky sense of humour sees Nine’s dating show go in a whole new direction – and families will love it!
Tonight Channel 9 will be releasing the launch promo for the upcoming season of Love Island Australia during The Block.
The network has also decided to release the promo on social media before its airing but TV Blackbox has been given the exclusive first look, which shows Sophie Monk playing a mermaid.
The promo uses the classic song Down Under by Men At Work to poke fun at itself with the series relocating to Australia.
In fact, TV Blackbox can reveal co-writer Colin Hay worked with the promo team at Nine to remix the iconic song which was first released in 1980 as a B side to the single Keypunch Operator.
The song was then released as a single and went on to dominate charts around the world.
The use of music and humour in the promo is a deliberate attempt by Nine to broaden the audience of Love Island Australia for its upcoming season.
While Nine is in a neck-and-neck battle for total people, the network is stronger in the all-important demos and if the dating show can attract older viewers as well it just might give Nine the winning edge.
Filled with gags, the promo made my wife and kids laugh out loud – which is not an easy feat. So-much-so they all expressed an interest in seeing the show, which they have not watched before.
With COVID-19 forcing productions to abandon plans to shoot overseas, Nine has ramped up the fun of shooting in Australia and avoided taking itself too seriously.
Monk overplays her lines and isn’t afraid to make fun of herself. She has become one of the most down-to-earth hosts on television – relatable and funny.
The key to any promo launch is to make a memorable spot that entices the audience to take a look. The promo team at Nine has achieved this objective. Now it will be up to the show to deliver.

Hi Amazing Rob!
Do you know if the amazing narrator, Eoghan McDermott is back again this year? Legit he is the best out of all the Love Island editions – although Matt Hoffman in America is a very close 2nd that’s for sure. Last year his running gags were just sublime and anyone who can make he laugh at the phrase “Mooooooon” is a winner! I understand if it is too random or early to find yet but his Insta still lists Love Island Aus in his bio. Love you and your site like always, thanks in advance! 😀
Sorry Mark, only just saw this. I am asking the questions.
Thanks for your kind words
Nine are holding off any announcements until their upfronts, sorry
