Days after the shocking and brutal stabbing death of his mother-in-law Vibeke Rasmussen, filmmaker John MacGibbon picks up his camera and begins a harrowing search for truth.

How to Survive a Murder is a remarkable film captured in real time documenting the tale of a preventable crime that never should have occurred. John and his family are desperate to find out what led to Vibeke being slashed and stabbed more than 35 times late one night in her apartment in historic Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Police would reveal only that they knew who they were looking for— the victim’s new neighbour, a 24-year-old man with a violent past. Frustrated by the puzzling hostility and evasive behaviour of authorities, MacGibbon launches his own investigation to find out what precipitated this gruesome and frenzied murder.

In this stunning four-part documentary, How to Survive a Murder uncovers a web of lies and deceit spun to protect an influential Plymouth family.

This is a story of police coverups, lenient judges and prosecutors, and the dark family secrets that turned a privileged, charming and deeply disturbed young man into a killer.

HOW TO SURVIVE A MURDER – Season 1 Australian Premiere airs Thursday August 19 at 7.30pm on CRIME + INVESTIGATION or watch On Demand
