Some impressive stats at Nine’s Sydney newsroom celebrates another year on top.

Peter Overton and the team at 9 News Sydney are celebrating another ratings victory, claiming 21 weeks out of a possible 40.

That means Nine’s flagship 6pm bulletin has now won the Sydney battles for 11 consecutive years.

And the stats are impressive:

  • Out of the last 400 ratings weeks, Nine has won 384 weeks; and
  • All other networks combined (including the ABC) have won just over 16 over the last decade

Sydney news director Simon Hobbs sent a congratulatory e-mail to staff, saying:

An achievement like this is only possible when a talented group of people come together with an unwavering commitment to excellence.

The Sydney newsroom is at the centre of a network which produces around 230,000 news stories every year. The content you create is fuel that runs our TV, Digital, Social and radio platforms.

The last 12 months have been the toughest in the long history of 9News.

Outside of two World Wars, we in the middle of the longest running crisis our country has ever faced.

It’s been mentally, physically and emotionally exhausting for all of you. And yet somehow you’ve kept on running hard.

In early 2009 the decision was made to replace Mark Ferguson with Overton after a dire few years for the 6pm ratings in Sydney.

Together with a change of management behind the scenes and a focus on rejuvenating the brand of Nine News, ratings started picking up significantly over the course of the year until 9 became the ratings leader once again.
