After a long wait, the Seven Network will welcome all Australians to a momentous 17 days in history, beginning with the Opening Ceremony.
Seven’s Opening Ceremony coverage will be led by Australia’s pre-eminent sport broadcaster Bruce McAvaney, alongside fan favourites Johanna Griggs and Hamish McLachlan.
Commenting on Australia’s chances, Bruce McAvaney said:
“Beyond sport, it will be a news story that will captivate and challenge us all for the 16 days of competition. Because the reality is nobody really knows what to expect.
The Australian team is exciting.”
“How successful will they be? There’s great optimism, certainly. We feel we have had some advantages over the northern hemisphere in the way we’ve been able to prepare.”
“I think it will get down to our swimming team, as it nearly always does. We’ve already had a taste of what might be possible.”
“Our athletics team is a revelation, with strong performances over the past 18 months.”
“And when you think about who is on our team alongside household names such as Steph Gilmore, Sam Kerr, Kyle Chalmers, Cate Campbell, Ash Barty and Liz Cambage – and I could name another 20 – we dare to think we could be very successful.”
Joining Seven’s opening ceremony team will be Australian broadcaster Kumi Taguchi. Her role will include providing commentary on the cultural and artistic elements of the Tokyo 2020 Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
Ahead of the ceremony, 7plus will continue its coverage of the preliminary events with live or on-demand action from the Roving and the Archery.
Seven’s coverage of the Opening Ceremony will commence at 8.30pm AEST on Channel 7 and 7plus.
