ADRIFT
Glenn Anderson has learnt one of life’s very tough lessons the hard way: no amount of careful planning will ever be enough to fully mitigate danger. Seven weeks ago, the experienced yachtsman took his 11-year-old daughter Ruby on what was supposed to be an unforgettable adventure, a 1200km sailing trip exploring the wild and remote coast of Western Australia. It’s true that they’ll never forget it, but not for the right reasons. Father and daughter nearly died after a rogue wave capsized their yacht and they were hurled into the ocean. How they survived, badly injured and kilometres from shore, is an incredible story of strength and plain good luck. As Liam Bartlett reports, it’s also an important reminder to never underestimate the power of the sea.

WANTED!
Making babies should be one of the greatest joys in life. But for so many who want to be parents, it’s the opposite. Despite a deep longing, hearing the pitter-patter of tiny feet doesn’t happen. Science tries to help through egg donation or even surrogacy, but there are no guarantees, and when bureaucracy complicates the formula, the outcome is often heartbreak. Unbelievably, in the last few years in Australia, it has become more difficult for people struggling to start a family. On 60 MINUTES, Sarah Abo asks the most important question: why can’t we make the path to parenthood easier?

OUT OF CONTROL
The stage was a court of law instead of a concert hall, but pop star Britney Spears still managed a jaw-dropping performance last Thursday. She sensationally told a judge her life had been destroyed by her father. It’s an ordeal that began 13 years ago when a highly controversial legal order effectively gave Jamie Spears full control over his daughter. The so-called conservatorship meant he decided everything Britney did and didn’t do, from when she worked to how she spent her money; what she ate and who she talked to. As one of her legal conservators, he even determined she wasn’t allowed to have more children. But now the 39-year-old singer has had enough and is fighting to break free.
