What does TV Blackbox contributor Abbey have in store for your viewing pleasure?

Hello, dear readers! Abbey here.

It is my pleasure to bring you my viewing recommendations as various parts of the country are in lockdown. There’s humour, there’s easy-viewing, there are thrilling distractions, whatever you may need!

(We’d also love to know your recommendations too – please share them in the comments below.)

GILMORE GIRLS
Netflix

This is my number one pick to help you survive lockdown, and to help you through life in general. For the past 18 years, my days have just been a constant rotation of Gilmore Girls seasons 1-7, (plus A Year in the Life thrown in for good measure since 2016). Lorelai and Rory, and the Stars Hollows townies, have never let me down.

This is the perfect show for when you want to relax, and enjoy some feel-good viewing. It’s a show about nothing, but you will see elements of yourself in each of the characters, and end up feeling like they are your friends… or maybe that’s just me.

SCHITT’S CREEK
Netflix

I was so very late to the party with this one – in fact, I only started watching Schitt’s Creek around a month ago. In that time, I have watched so frequently that I only have a few episodes left (and am intentionally putting them off because I don’t want this to end, ever).

The wealthy Rose family lose their fortune after being defrauded by their business manager. They rebuild their lives with their sole remaining asset: a small town named Schitt’s Creek

I have fallen in love with each character, even though they are so likeably unlikeable. I have even found myself speaking with Moira’s accent, which I’m sure is incredibly frustrating to everyone around me, but which I thoroughly enjoy.

ORPHAN BLACK
Stan

This Canadian science fiction thriller follows an orphan who gets caught up in a deadly conspiracy after learning that she is a clone.

Tatiana Maslany deserves every award, ever, for this show, as she plays multiple different characters, sometimes playing each other. Each clone is completely different, yet as a viewer, you relate with each of them in a different way. It’s a mind-f****, it’s gripping, it’s just brilliant.

I have also been trying to get TV Blackbox’s, Rob McKnight, to watch this for the entirety of our friendship, to no avail. So perhaps if I put it here, he may give it a chance!

THE MARVELOUS MRS MAISEL
Prime Video

Another gem by Amy Sherman-Palladino (also the creator of Gilmore Girls), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel didn’t sweep up awards season in 2018 for no reason.

Taking place in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the series stars Rachel Brosnahan as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a New York housewife who discovers she has a knack for stand-up comedy and pursues a career in it. The series also stars Alex Borstein, and newly announced cast member, Kelly Bishop(!!!).

It’s fast-paced, it’s clever, it’s an untold story, and is worth it for the fashion alone.

THE HILLS (Reaction Videos)
YouTube

This is early 2000s reality trash, The Hills, with a twist! Not only do you see the episodes almost in their entirety, but with reactions and commentary of cast member, Whitney Port. Whitney and her husband, Tim Rosenman, who was a producer on The City, Whitney’s spinoff show, are rewatching the series with their own takes and behind the scenes information.

Even for those who weren’t fans of the original show, their input is informative, and their humour refreshing.

My only complaint is that two new episodes a week is simply not enough!

Good Girls – Netflix
The Haunting of Hill House – Netflix
Marvel’s Jessica Jones – Netflix
Sharp Objects – Binge
