The Seven Network continues its ratings resurgence in 2021, securing another network win despite big numbers for the State of Origin on Nine.

Seven won the week 24 network survey by the narrow margin of 29.3% vs 29.1%. The network benefiting from three nights of AFL coverage and strong numbers for its 6pm news bulletins. Reality franchise Big Brother and 7News Spotlight investigations are also proving to be a winner with audiences.

Wednesday nights State Of Origin coverage achieved a national average audience of 2.713 million (Metro: 1.911 million / Regional: 802,000) the result was up 13.6% compared with last years game one coverage.

It’s the first time Nine has lost a State Of Origin ratings week since 2018. Nine did however manage to win in primary channel figures with 21.5% compared with Channel 7 on 19.6%.

Seven and Nine have now won 12 weeks each so far in the 2021 calendar year.

While Nine benefited from a solid start to the year thanks to Married At First Sight and the Australian Open, the reboot of old franchises including Celebrity Apprentice and The Weakest Link has failed to maintain strong viewer interest.

Seven has now been the #1 network for the past seven consecutive weeks.

In a note to staff obtained by TV Blackbox, Seven Network CEO James Warburton thanked his team for the strong result:

We had another great result last week, winning the week despite the first State of Origin game.

That means we’ve won 12 ratings weeks this calendar year, the same number as Nine. On a survey year basis, we have now been #1 for seven weeks in a row and are snapping at Nine’s heels (they have won nine survey weeks).

This is a phenomenal result and a real testament to the hard work and enthusiasm across all departments at Seven.

We are the only network that has increased its audience share this year and our content for the rest of the year is very strong. 7plus is also having a great year and will grow even faster when the Olympics start next month.

Thank you everyone and keep up the great work.
