In an exclusive interview Seven’s Director of Programming Angus Ross reveals his plans for 2022 and beyond.

Seven West Media

Angus Ross has been the Director of Programming at the Seven Network since 2012. He carries the weight of the commissioning and acquisitions of all entertainment content across the channels of Seven and 7plus.

Whilst we all have a little bit of programmer in us, Angus is ultimately responsible for what we watch and how we watch it on the channels of Seven, whether the content be available for linear broadcast or on their streaming service, 7plus.

Rumours have been swirling that My Kitchen Rules could be making a comeback as early as 2022. In a new interview I recorded with Angus for the TV Blackbox podcast Angus reveals:

“We’d like to revisit the format at some point but at the moment it feels way too soon.

“It’s certainly not anywhere in next year’s schedule.”

In a wide-ranging interview Angus also talks about the future of Holey Moley and Dancing With The Stars.

Other topics include:

  • His high school days and what he wanted to do prior to being in the media, including his jobs before landing at Channel 7
  • Lessons learned by the team at Seven
  • James Warburton’s new strategy
  • Current performance of the network
  • The Chase Australia (with Larry Emdur)
  • Holey Moley Australia
  • Ultimate Tag Australia
  • Dancing with the Stars
  • Big Brother Australia
  • The sledging between the commercial channels
  • Australian Gangster
  • SAS Australia
  • More on MKR and those comeback rumours
  • Australian drama
  • Nine’s strategy of promoting 9Now by showing premiere episodes on linear
  • Evolution of an idea to broadcast
  • Ratings (and the idea of moving from overnights to 7 day ratings)
  • What shows Seven have missed out on
  • Viewer annoyance – not playing out shows
  • His view on fast-tracking programs from overseas networks
  • Can Seven win the ratings year in 2021?
  • The year of reboots
  • Factors involved in scheduling a show
  • Is being a network programmer a double-edged sword?

I would like to sincerely thank Angus Ross for his time for this podcast – much longer than any interview he has previously done. It really gives an insight into the life of a programmer, how shows are made and scheduled and the performance of the network as a whole.
