It’s one of the most high-profile murder cases and 25 years later the killer has still not been caught, but new DNA evidence could change all that

On Boxing Day 1996 the world woke up to the news the little girl had been kidnapped, but what was to follow was much worse. The death of 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenét sent shockwaves around the world.

Now there are reports that police have collected DNA evidence from the neighbour of JonBenét.

True crime author Amanda Howard is known as The Serial Killer Whisperer due to the information she gets out of these monsters. Amanda has been corresponding and talking to criminals around the world and is an expert in the field.

Last night she appeared on The Anj, Rob and Robbo Show to explain what this latest development means:

“To have developments like we’ve had this week has been amazing to see.

“There seems to be a final breakthrough in the case. I mean it’s not the first time we’ve seen a breakthrough but it is a big one.”

The story was broken by Radar which reported the DNA sample of the person of interest was taken from a discarded cigarette.

Local authorities are now handing that DNA sample over to local FBI agents for testing.

“They might be getting closer to an answer, so that’s thrilling that DNA, once again, looks like it might solve a case”, says Amanda.

DNA evidence was used to catch the notorious Golden State Killer. Joseph James DeAngelo Jr had avoided capture for over 45 years before DNA samples brought him undone.

Amanda explained in the interview that DeAngelo’s DNA was obtained from an unused coffee cup after. Investigators targetted him after posting DNA evidence to an ancestry company. By chance, relatives of DeAngelo had given their DNA to the site.

JonBenét’s brother has long been a suspect in the court of public opinion and Amanda says this new evidence isn’t necessarily the break he needs to clear his name – if he is innocent:

“Though we pin a lot of hope on DNA, we have to remember that there is still these other scenarios that might be more viable or that this just could be that red herring that inspires the case. Sometimes one piece of evidence will actually lead to a secondary piece of evidence which might just bring it all back together to where it needs to be”.
