Episode four tackles the theme of mobility as experts Geriatrician Dr Stephanie Ward and aged care physiotherapist Nicola Kertanegara focus the activities to get the group moving and building up strength and endurance.

With over half of the group scoring below average on their balance and walking speed, this group of older adults are at risk of losing their independence and being able to stay in their own homes.

This week begins a yoga class, which is not something many of the older adults have done before.

Whilst the women participants are reluctant to join in, the men dominate the activity, and we discover that just like in the general population, the women in the experiment are generally weaker and frailer than their male counterparts. 86-year-old retired secretary Maureen is one of the most reluctant and frailest females in the group, having recently battled breast cancer.

But her inner competitive drive sees her pushing herself out of her comfort zone and getting on the floor with the kids to finish the class.

The participants this week will also have to wrangle dogs and children at a local park, as they are tasked with taking senior dogs from the RSPCA for a walk. Then to focus the group’s drive to become fitter and stronger the participants are told they are to compete in a carnival competition at the end of the week, in which the group must compete in two teams, in three different mobility testing challenges.

To get them match fit, the participants are tasked with a gusty whoopy cushion challenge which challenges their ability to do a sit to stand movement and build up their leg muscles. This leads them straight into a timed walk around the preschool, pushing each member to their limit.
