Over five years of gold, sweat and tears, we’ve witnessed the soaring highs and crushing lows faced by resilient gold prospectors and some history-making discoveries.

After a phenomenal last season, which saw one crew unearth two nuggets worth over $350,000, Discovery’s global hit series and #1 local production Aussie Gold Hunters is back bigger than ever this week.

And it’s set to be the toughest season yet, as seven teams of gold hunters push themselves like never before as they face the harsh realities of the hunt. Seasoned pros return along with two new teams, there are new locations as the series expands into Queensland and, of course, plenty of gold.

This season, the gold hunters battle the mounting heat and treacherous wilderness, determined to cash in on the highest Australian gold price in history, sparking a modern-day gold rush.

With an unwavering belief that they could land a life-changing monster nugget, there’s no giving up in this game for the Aussie Gold Hunters crews based in Western Australia, Victoria, and – for the first time – Queensland.

Returning to the fold is The Poseidon Crew (VIC) –Brent Shannon & Ethan West, who are joined by Ethan’s dad Paul and later in the season, Brent’s ambitious 14-year-old son Cayden, who proves to be a chip off the old block; The Dust Devils (WA) – Paul & John Mackie and Jake & Mike Armstrong; The Gold Timers (WA) – Rob Dale and Rob ‘Turbo’ Linton; Shane Calegari and Russell Nash (WA); and Noongar/Wonguthaman Marcus McGuire and his brother Linden Brownley (WA).

One of this season’s new teams is detectorist duo and good friends Jacqui Buzetti & Andrew Leahy (QLD) who launch their hunt in the subtropical wilderness of Queensland in the Warwick Goldfields. When she’s not out fossicking for gold, Jacqui is a beauty therapist and makeup artist.

One day she’s giving her clients makeovers, but the next she’s braving mosquitoes and funnel web spiders in her pursuit for gold. She caught gold fever as a kid while out prospecting and sluicing with her Dad. Andrew is a full-time prospector with 18 years of experience and is dubbed Professor “geoleahy” because he’s a mineral guru!

The Ferals (WA) – Rob Beeton, Ryan Peters, and Levi North, are also new this season. They’re an eclectic mix of prospectors chasing big targets of alluvial gold in the oldest, exposed landscape on the planet – the Pilbara region. Their set up is simple – camping in the bush and sleeping in their cars, but don’t let their ‘feral’ lifestyle fool you, they’ve got the enthusiasm and tricks up their sleeve to make it work. Using drone technology, the team searches for signs of the old-timers, so they can pick up where they left off with modern machinery. They each have personal reasons for needing to make target, but will they reach their goal?

Over 20 episodes, the stakes get higher for all the teams. Fresh off their record-breaking season which made global news, The Poseidon Crew is determined to maintain the success of last year, following an old treasure map which leads to a massive nugget – but will it be a season best?

One thing’s for certain, Cayden could be their lucky charm. He’s always had the bug, helping his dad dig for nuggets in rural Victoria from an early age, and is already adept at operating heavy-duty mining machines. Now, Cayden steps up to the challenge and finds a monster nugget of his own. Is The Poseidon Crew set to steal the show for a second time around?

The Dust Devils gamble on their most expensive and riskiest mining operation ever, chasing the largest target in the history of Aussie Gold Hunters: 600 ounces, or over $1.5 million! Brothers Marcus & Lindencall in an experienced mentor to help get them on gold in the first week of their new season, will it pay off? Shane & Russellhunt their highest season target ever, but will their homemade sluice make the grade?

The Gold Timers start their season lost in the scorching outback, later confronting a poacher on their lease. And they’re not the only ones subject to prying eyes, as The Ferals also battle thieves in intense 40-degree temperatures. Meanwhile, Jacqui & Andrew encounter problems early in the piece as heavily mineralised ground causes frustration. Will the Durakai State Forest – a QLD gold-hunting mecca – be the answer to their problems?

The dream to strike it rich continues, but it takes perseverance to make it a reality.

Aussie Gold Hunters is produced by Electric Pictures for Discovery Channel.
