We watch Dancing with the Stars for the costumes, the dancing, the banter, the fun and the variety of the series. However, contestants are eliminated based on voting and rules.

Tonight’s episode of Dancing with the Stars featured the elimination of Schapelle Corby after a bottom two ‘dance off’. Both Matt J and Schapelle landed in the bottom two after the judges and studio audience scores were combined.

Both contestants had to re perform a dance from earlier in the night with the objective being which celebrity and dance partner could take the comments they were given earlier and give a better performance.

Co-host Sonia Kruger very clearly and slowly said that the judges must judge the dance off “based on that dance alone.”

Mark Wilson voted for Matty J to stay based on the fact that he believed that Matty J danced better than Schapelle.

However, Paul Mercurio voted for Matty J purely based on “we haven’t seen all we’re going to see from this couple” but when Todd McKenney interjected and said, “but Schapelle danced so much better” Paul agreed.

Helen Richey also agreed with Todd (being that Schapelle had performed better than Matty J in the dance off) but voted for Matty J because the couple are more in harmony and she could see more potential with Matty J in the future.

At this point Todd McKenney was outvoted and his vote to save Schapelle made no difference.

Based on the rule to judge on the dance alone, the vote (based on the comments) should have seen a vote of 3 to 1 in favour of saving Schapelle, but because two judges ignored the rule to vote based on the dance alone, the vote came in at 3 – 1 to save Matty J.

If the rule can be ignored to vote based on the dance alone, then there is no real point of the dance off. If the foundational reason to have a dance off is to give two couples an opportunity to prove themselves once more and the dance itself is not holistically considered, then what is the point of it?

Good on you Todd for jumping in and sticking up for the rules!

Putting aside some viewers thoughts on whether Schapelle Corby should have even been considered for Dancing with the Stars, the outcome was not right.

Do you agree?

  1. No I agree with the judges and I don’t think schappelle corby should have been on the show to start with.

    • No she should not have been on there in the first place .I have a question if you go to jail for smuggling drugs how does that make you a star or a celebrity????

  2. I agree with Todd. In the full meaning of the rules, Schapelle danced better than Matty, therefore deserved to stay. The other judges were wrong, and 2 of them admitted she danced better, but they then voted for Matty. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

  3. Shepelle should be judged on her dancing.
She has already been judged on her criminal activity regardless if you think she is guilty or not!
People have never made a mistake in their life .

    • Drug smuggling is Criminal. Yes we made mistakes but this is a whole different messed up incident . She was so lucky not to be executed with the others.

  4. The fact is Shepelle should never have been placed in the show, this was done purely for viewer reaction.

      • Seriously, a corrupt justice system found her guilty and she was never given a fair trial.
Her guilt is still highly debatable. Schapelle suffered enough and deserves to move on and be left alone. Good on her for surviving the hell she went through.

  5. Absolutely she should have been out. She shouldn’t even have on the program in the first place. She’s a drug criminal – not a good look for young people. Shame on the show.

    • I agree, she is being glorified, i believe she was guilty regarding the drug trafficking.
Why do they keep on giving her TV offers is beyond me.

  6. I felt that Shepelle danced better the second time. It really stood out. Matt posture was terrible. Shapeless should have gone through. They should right this and bring her back.

  7. Sheppelle should have gone through. She was the better dancer on the dance off. Should bring her back.

  8. I cannot for the life of me understand why Corby is given the title of a Star. She is a convicted drug trsffiker. Will Greg Domasabucz be on next year???

    • My point exactly Dancing with the STARS load of crap!!! She may of done her time but she shouldn’t be making money of it!!!!

  9. The rules were not followed. They agreed Schapelle and her partner Shae danced better in the dance off yet still voted for Matt. Why have a dance off if they are not voting on the dance! Schapelle has been judged and had to do put up with all the nasty comments from the public just for excepting to be in the the show for excepting to do something different that alot of others would jump at the chance to experience so I really think it unfair that the judges ignored the rules and blatet voted her out. Don’t get me wrong Matty J is great to watch but rules are rules and should be followed in a competition like this. Good on Schapelle she departed with dignity and held her head high.

  10. I don’t think sheppelle Corby should of been kick off dancing with stars all stars she dances with style and glamour it should off been matty J instead the dance was breathing I too did ballroom dancing I’m not famous but I did got competition,s and would of giving her a 10 and they should have a new show called dancing with audience I think they may a mistake on dancing with the star’s and I was disappointed that Sheppelle Corby I hope bring her back she,s the best

  11. Sheppelle should never of been there in the first place she’s not a celebrity she’s a convicted drug smuggler

  12. I agree wholeheartedly that Schapelle danced much better in the standoff. The judges, apart from Todd, got it wrong in voting Schapelle off. I believe she has a lot to offer & puts her heart & soul into all that she does.

  13. Yes, of course Sheppelle Corby should be allowed to enter the competition.
Scheppelle has paid a monstrous price for her past!!
Sheppelle showed great courage and dignity.
Brett have some empathy, she’s paid the price, she is trying to enjoy and have a positive life.
Obviously, Channel 7 thought Sheppelle would attract attention.
Well done Sheppelle, you were very gracious and continue to challenge yourself. You deserve to have a good/positive future.

  14. I think a few of the comments reveal a criminal lack of spelling and grammar knowledge with the misspelling of Schapelle’s name and the criminal use of ‘should of’ instead of ‘should have’, ‘never of’ instead of ‘should have never been’……Schapelle has done her time very hard. Get off her back.

  15. Shapelle Corby is not a celebrity! Therefore she should not have been on Dancing With The Stars in the first place

  16. Didn’t watch it after the first night. I thought there was a law that says criminals cannot profit from their crimes. Because to me that’s what’s happening with HER she is not a celebrity she is a convicted criminal therefore shouldn’t have been chosen for the show. I was looking forward to watching the show but it turned me off of it having her on, i only watched the first night because i had hope Ada might have been on. Before the do gooders say she did her time, fair enough but doing something illegal should not make her a STAR, what kind of example is that setting for young people.

  17. I don’t think it was fair for but to me She Served Her Time now People Need to Respect That what would happen if this was your Daughter would you Shut her Out of Your Life if So it would show that YOU WOULDN’T HAVE A HEART TO FORGIVE.

  18. Criminal or not, the woman is not a star nor a celebrity. The show is called Dancing With The Stars.
It is not fair for the other contestants who have worked hard and deserve to be called STARS.

  19. In my humble opinion:
    1. Ms Corby is not a star or celebrity and should not have been included
    2. The judges did not judge according to the rules
    3. The judging in general is not fair. By including votes from the studio audience the contestants with more friends and family present will receive more votes irrespective of their dancing ability. Therefore some will get through who do not deserve to and others will be eliminated who deserve to stay. Ultimately the winner of the contest may not necessarily be the best dancer.

I won’t be watching on Sunday – I’m going ballroom dancing!

  20. It’s ridiculous that someone can be convicted for drug smuggling and become a star. Its a great advert for future generations. She is not a star. Far from it.

  21. Yes Schapelle should have been out. It is a competition, the judges need to tell the truth. I was once a dancer and, yes, its a hard call. When you compete you know if you are not good enough you are out. Get over it.
    .

  22. It makes laugh at how judgemental society is she has done her time one mistake with dope not Herion or ice how many people snort drugs up their nose how many people kill others on the road how many people committ family violence those that cause teenagers to commit suicide by bullying on social media and in australia tap on the wrist no one knows if she did it only she knows that being in a Bali jail would not be like being here people are very quick to point a finger just look at the first lock down every one for themselves 2nd lock down the same where such a great society i am neither for or against her but as the better dancer its not right tv channels only care about ratings

  23. Chopper Reid made a killing by his acts of carnage. Plus he was a terrible example of a man..
Why not Shapelle? She has served her time in a horrible jail cell..
Stop judging others OR you in turn shall be judged.
Have a heart people… Let God be the judge …

  24. Ms Corby is a convicted criminal. Why on earth would anyone want to see her on TV? Try explaining to a child what she’s famous for. Seriously, this is Australia, there are plenty of law abiding celebrities to dance.

  25. Corby is a convicted criminal. Not a star. Do you want this person as a role model for your children? Commit a crime then want to profit from that? Shame on you selectors. Hope you can exercise better judgement in the future

  26. I’m only watching it now because that convicted drug woman is of it channel seven will never get my ratings if she’s on it

  27. That’s two shows she’s been on . Now I ask would you like to see Israel FOLAU on the show. He did far less for more punishment by all the media . Banished from Australia . Just wondering if he was true Aussie if he would have had a second chance also .😎
