Despite a dramatic drop-off in ratings, the Seven Network has indicated bizarre mini-contest Holey Moley will return for a revamped season in 2022.

The AFR is today reporting Holey Moley is expected to return with a scaled-back format of one episode per week in 2022.

The hugely expensive mini-golf series kicked off Seven’s 2021 ratings year in a timeslot previously occupied by My Kitchen Rules.

Seven had hoped the family-friendly would deliver a younger audience for the network, the premiere episode performed well with 983k metro viewers. But a mix of lame jokes and multiple 90-minute episodes would see those figures quickly drop away. The season finale had an audience of just 491k

In an interview with AFR, Seven’s chief revenue officer Kurt Burnette indicated despite the dramatic drop-off, the program had done enough to ensure its return.

“We wanted Holey Moley to come in and do a job which was give us growth year-on-year on the timeslot against My Kitchen Rules, it did. Was it to the levels we had expected and hoped? No. Did it do the job we wanted it to as a minimum? Yes it did,”

“The sponsors and partners that were on board…we made sure they met their objectives on the way through. In that respect, it was ok.”
