Ever since Channel 7 announced the return of Dancing With The Stars as a two-week special event featuring former contestants, rumours have been swirling that original presenter Daryl Somers would be returning.

Well, it turns out those rumours are true.

TV Blackbox broke the news first that the show would be returning, and rumours began to circulate immediately.

Sources tell TV Blackbox the iconic presenter was on set last week for a promo shoot at Seven’s Eveleigh studios.

His shock appearance raised eyebrows with those involved in the shoot.

The star has also been seen at the International Convention Centre where the series is being filmed. Technical checks have been taking place before cameras roll in the coming weeks.

Sources also reveal Sonia Kruger is also returning to her old role, in addition to her hosting duties for Big Brother and Holey Moley (both of which have been pre-recorded and completed).

Seven is set to announce full cast details in the coming days.

  1. When the article said that the “…International Convention Centre where the series is being filmed…” and that “…Technical checks have been taking place before cameras roll in the coming weeks…” made me reflect how over the years there has been less dependence on in-house studio facilities.

With the exception of the ABC, SBS and Seven (Everleigh), the networks generally have used external facilities to make large production shows especially when the original production studios have been pulled down in recent years. General examples include using the Fox Studios (Moore Park) and even a warehouse to produce “Dancing With The Stars” (Network 10).

Yet the idea of repurposing a facility to make television productions whether permanently or temporarily is not new.

Seven in Melbourne repurposed the Hoyts Regent Theatre in Fitzroy as a TV studio,

Similarly the “Ed Sullivan Theatre” in NY, originally a house for theatre performances has been repurposed thrice, first as a nightclub, then as a radio theatre and then as a TV production theatre.

As Peter Allen said in his song “…everything old is new again…”. Alternatively the Bible in Ecclesiastes 1:9 says “…there is nothing new under the sun…”

  2. Further to the article about repurposed facilities for television production, I avert to an article from “The Argus”, ref: https://havrillay.com/fitzroy-teletheatre-hsv-7-announced-listener-tv-10-dec-1962 showing how the remodelled theatre was being used for television production.
In the same way that the studio for “Dancing With The Stars” at International Convention Centre were being pre-tested, comes the words from “The Argus”, ‘…JUST TESTING…’.

“The Argus” further remarks that NBC repurposed the “Ziegfeld Theatre” in NY for shows including “The Perry Como Show”, ref: http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/2251 .

One of the first drama/reality show produced from the HSV Fitzroy facility was “Consider Your Verdict” where legal cases were dramatized and serialized. The actors played to their character without resort to a script, ref: https://www.classicaustraliantv.com/CYV.htm

Another demonstration of “…everything old is new again…” or “…nothing new under the sun…” in facility repurposing AND even a suggestion for a program revival.

    Thank you,
    Anthony of exciting Belfield
