A brilliant straight sets win for Ash Barty meant the tennis would be untouchable. What has become a trend otherwise is THE AMAZING RACE AUSTRALIA beating out HOLEY MOLEY AUSTRALIA.
Nine benefit significantly from Australian Open 2021 Night 8 (726,000), with Ash Barty’s defeat of Shelby Rogers (877,000) head and shoulders above everything else. Literally no competition. An easy win for Nine in both primary (19.1%) & network (27.6%) shares.
Seven celebrate that Home and Away (532,000) is the top entertainment show of the night, which is like celebrating you had only two fingers cut off in that accident. Holey Moley Australia (468,000) dives to its lowest numbers this season – having lost over half its audience from night one – and the finale is in sight next week, sure to underwhelm. What an expensive failure it has been for a network that can’t afford it. Later in the evening US dramas 9-1-1 (310,000) and The Rookie (207,000) keep DVRs and night owls happy. Seven second in both primary (17.7%) & network (26.2%) shares.
The ABC’s audience sinks after Leigh Sales popped up at a Dan Andrews presser yesterday for 7:30Â (602,000), though the consistency of Australian Story (457,000), Four Corners (452,000), and Media Watch (436,000) make for a compelling argument against having moved Q&A to Thursday. The Pacific: In the Wake of Captain Cook with Sam Neill (304,000) and a repeat of You Can’t Ask That (172,000) run out their night. ABC again third in primary (13.4%) & fourth in network (18.2%) shares.
10’s night was all over the place. The bombshell Brittany Higgins interview on The Project (278,000 6:30pm; 501,000 7pm) helped the second half hour to its biggest numbers this year, and The Amazing Race Australia (546,000) clearly won the battle of entertainment at 7:30pm. Hughesy, We Have A Problem (280,000) shed a buttload of viewers from its lead-in; offering executives pause for their diminishing investment. A late-night repeat of The Graham Norton Show (114,000) was tokenistic, at best. 10 a deep fourth in primary (11.6%) & though thanks to 10 Bold third in network (19.9%) shares.
