Following a highly successful US digital release, Netflix has acquired local streaming rights for filmmaker Seth Larney’s Australian sci-fi thriller, 2067.

Starring Kodi Smit-McPhee (X-Men: Apocalypse), Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) and Deborah Mailman (The Sapphires), 2067 is an epic sci-fi adventure set in a not too distant future, exploring what humans are willing to sacrifice.

By the year 2067, Earth has been ravaged by climate change and humanity is forced to live on artificial oxygen. A mysterious illness is slowly killing the world’s population and the only hope for a cure comes in the form of a message from the future: Send Ethan Whyte.

Suddenly Ethan (Kodi Smit-McPhee), an underground tunnel worker, is sent to the future where he must face imminent and unknown dangers as well as the possibility of never returning home.

Formally a visual effects supervisor, director Seth Larney (Tombiruo) was inspired by classic 70’s and 80’s sci-fi films and wanted to provide commentary on today’s climate crisis, “our deforestation of the planet for greed in the face of catastrophic climate change – terrifies me”.

2067 premiered as the opening night film at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2020. It was released in the US on 2nd October 2020 by RLJE, opening Number 3 on VOD and is currently placed in the top 10 on US iTunes.

2067 was produced by Arcadia’s Lisa Shaunessy (Killing Ground), Futurism’s Jason Taylor (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Kate Croser (Top End Wedding) for Kojo. Executive Producers include Michael Rymer and Alexandra Burke.

The film received production funding from Screen Australia, in association with South Australian Film Corporation, Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund and Screen NSW and was financed with support from Elevate Production Finance, Grumpy Sailor, Spectrum Films and Cumulus VFX.

2067 will be available to stream on Netflix Australia from Friday 19 February.
