Media monitoring firm Streem has appointed former Sky News reporter and government media advisor David Sharaz to the new role of ACT Business Manager.

Streem’s list of federal government clients has grown rapidly in recent years, and includes the Departments of Prime Minister & Cabinet, Defence, Treasury, Veterans’ Affairs, Finance, and agencies including the ACCC, ATO and Productivity Commission.

Streem CEO Elgar Welch said it was now time to establish dedicated operations in Canberra, after successful expansions into Melbourne and London for the Sydney-based company.

“Streem has a strong track record among departments and MPs’ offices. Having worked on both the media and government side, David brings tremendous insight to the role, as well as close relationships forged over his decade living in the capital,”

– Welch said.

One of Sharaz’s first tasks will be demonstrating Streem’s advantages to departments who have not yet seen the realtime platform, and remain contracted to legacy providers. Federal government media monitoring contracts were worth more than $17m in 2019, according to AusTender data, however not all departments and agencies list their contracts.

“Streem has always performed well in open government tenders. We’re very confident that our realtime media platform is superior to anything else on the market and can also result in savings for departments,”

– Welch said.

“Part of David’s role will be convincing teams to take that first step and follow their counterparts to see the credible choice they now have in media monitoring.”

Sharaz’s most recent role was as a media advisor in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C). Before that he reported on politics for Sky News, SBS and WIN News.

Sharaz said he was enthusiastic about the platform’s capabilities and opportunities for further growth in a key market like Canberra.

“Politics, policy and media are Canberra obsessions, and I’m no exception,”

– he said.

“Streem has an outstanding reputation among existing clients here, so my role is to spread the word and help departments understand the massive advantage Streem brings to realtime media monitoring.”

Last year, Streem became the only media monitoring company to sign a new licensing agreement with the Copyright Agency that included higher payments to news publishers and granted customers improved rights to use content.

In August, the company appointed former Storyful Executive Director Asha Oberoi to the new role of Insights and Reporting Lead, in response to growing demand for rich media analysis.
