Kevin McCloud embarks on a nationwide journey to examine some of the most contemporary and cutting-edge homes in the running for the 2018 Royal Institute of British Architects House of the Year.
Each week, Kevin reveals which houses the RIBA judges have selected to shortlist, and, in the final program, announce the winner of this prestigious prize.
In the first episode, Kevin and his co-presenters architect Damion Burrows, and design expert Michelle Ogundehin, visit five extraordinary homes battling it out for a place on the shortlist, all of which dare to be different.
They include a magnificent monolithic dark-rendered block in London commissioned by a local café owner; a controversial cutting-edge glass and rusty modernist building in traditional Henley; a glorious north London townhouse filled with Nicaraguan mahogany; a beautiful bright red end-of-terrace in London – which aims to respect its Victorian neighbours, while standing out, and a smart semi-detached home in Newcastle built by two neighbours working together.
