Truth Seekers, 30 October

The highly anticipated Amazon Original series Truth Seekers is the perfect ghostly adventure for Halloween. This eight-part series follows a team of part-time paranormal investigators as they uncover and film ghost sightings across the UK, sharing their adventures for all to see. But as the group stake out haunted churches, underground bunkers and abandoned hospitals with their array of homemade ghost-detecting gizmos, their supernatural experiences grow more frequent, more terrifying and even deadly, as they uncover a cult leader’s mass conspiracy to sacrifice his unwitting followers to achieve immortality.

The Amazon Original series stars Nick Frost as Gus, Samson Kayo as Elton, Emma D’Arcy as Astrid, Malcolm McDowell as Richard, Simon Pegg as Dave, Susan Wokomaa as Helen and Julian Barratt as Dr. Peter Toynbee.

  • Evil Eye portrays a seemingly perfect romance-turn-nightmare when a mother becomesconvinced her daughter’s new boyfriend has a dark connection to her own past. Sarita Choudhury (Mississippi Masala, Lady in the Water), Sunita Mani (GLOW), Omar Maskati (Unbelievable), and Bernard White (Silicon Valley) star.
  • Completing the collection, Nocturne goes inside the halls of an elite arts academy, where a timid music student begins to outshine her more accomplished and outgoing twin sister after discovering a mysterious notebook belonging to a deceased classmate. The film stars Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, The Handmaid’s Tale, Player’s Table), Madison Iseman (Jumanji: The Next Level, Annabelle Comes Home),Jacques Colimon (The Society) andIvan Shaw (Insecure, Casual).

The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Streaming Now

The undead return to our screens just in time for Halloween. The Walking Dead: World Beyond delves into a new mythology and story that follows the first generation raised in a surviving civilization of the post-apocalyptic world of The Walking Dead. Two sisters and their two friends leave a place of safety and comfort to brave dangers, known and unknown, living and undead, on an important quest. Pursued by those who wish to protect them and those who wish to harm them, a tale of growing up and transformation unfurls across dangerous terrain, challenging everything they know about the world, themselves and each other. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. But all of them will find the truths they seek.

Co-created by Scott M. Gimple and showrunner Matt Negrete, the 10-part series stars Aliyah Royale as Iris, Alexa Mansour, Annet Mahendru as Huck, Nicolas Cantu as Elton, Australian actor Hal Cumpston as Silas, Nico Tortorella as Felix, and Julia Ormond as Elizabeth.

Midsommar, Streaming Now

Hailed by many as ‘the scariest movie of 2019’, from the director of the equally frightening Heredity,

Midsommar follows Dani and Christian, a young American couple with a relationship on the brink offalling apart. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip. What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a remote Swedish village, takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in local festivities.

Directed by Ari Aster (Hereditary), the film stars Florence Pugh (The Falling) and Jack Reynor

The Dead Don’t Die, Streaming Now

Zombies, the undead, ghouls…this seriously creepy comedy/horror has them in spades. In the sleepy small town of Centerville, something is not quite right. The moon hangs large and low in the sky, the hours of daylight are becoming unpredictable, and animals are beginning to exhibit unusual behaviours. No one quite knows why. News reports are scary and scientists are concerned. But no one foresees the strangest and most dangerous repercussion that will soon start plaguing Centerville: The Dead Don’t Die —they rise from their graves and savagely attack and feast on the living, and thecitizens of the town must battle for their survival.

From writer-director Jim Jarmusch (Paterson, Gimme Danger) the film stars Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Chloë Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, Iggy Pop, Steve Buscemi, Tom Waits, Selena Gomez, Danny Glover, Caleb Landry Jones and Carol Kane.

The Babadook, Streaming Now

This terrifying Australian psychological horror film became a huge success both locally and around the world. The Babadook follows Amelia who, plagued by the violent death of her husband, battles with her son Samuel’s fear of a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing children’s storybook titled “Mr Babadook” turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about.

As Samuel’s hallucinations spiral out of control and he becomes violent, Amelia is forced to medicate him. But soon she begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, and it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may in fact be real.

From writer-director Jennifer Kent (Monster, Dogville), the film stars Essie Davis (Assassin’s Creed) as Amelia and Noah Wiseman (The Gift) as Samuel.

The Blair Witch Project, Streaming Now

A cultural phenomenon when it was released, this documentary-style horror movie continues to terrify audiences today. The Blair Witch Project follows three student filmmakers – Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard – who travel to a small town to collect footage about the Blair Witch, a local legend. Over the course of several days, the students interview townspeople and gather clues to support the tale’s veracity. But the project takes a frightening turn when the students lose their way in the woods and begin hearing horrific noises. The three disappear, but their equipment and the chilling footage is discovered a year later.

SAW, Streaming Now

This horror hit from Australian creators Leigh Whannell and James Wan began a franchise that grossed over $873 million at the global box office. Saw follows photographer Adam Stanheight (Leigh Whannell) and oncologist Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) who regain consciousness while chained to pipes at either end of a filthy bathroom. As the two men realize they’ve been trapped by a sadistic serial killer nicknamed “Jigsaw” and must complete his perverse puzzle to live, flashbacks relate the fates of his previous victims. Meanwhile, Dr. Gordon’s wife (Monica Potter) and young daughter (Makenzie Vega) are forced to watch his torture via closed-circuit video. Saw is directed by James Wan.

Scream, Streaming Now

Wes Craven re-invented and revitalised the slasher-horror genre with this modern horror classic. The sleepy little town of Woodsboro just woke up screaming. There’s a killer in their midst who’s seen a few too many scary movies. Suddenly nobody is safe, as the knife-wielding psychopath stalks victims, taunts them with trivia questions, then rips them to shreds.
