Star thoroughbreds Verry Elleegant and Behemoth will be out to continue their fast starts to the Spring Racing Carnival this Saturday on Seven, when fans will enjoy all the LIVE and FREE action from George Main Stakes Day at Royal Randwick and MRC Foundation Race Day at Caulfield.
Verry Elleegant kick-started her spring campaign with a courageous victory in last month’s Group 1 Winx Stakes at Randwick, and the Chris Waller-trained mare will start favourite in the George Main Stakes (1600m) on Saturday.
The Waller stable has a strong hand in the Group 1 weight-for-age feature, with Kolding, Imaging and Star of the Seas also confirmed starters, but Verry Elleegant’s main opposition is expected to come from last year’s victor Avilius and Tramway Stakes winner Dreamforce.
At Caulfield, Behemoth looms as the horse to beat in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) after his last-start victory in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes. However, the David Jolly-trained gelding will have to beat a deep field in the Group 1 feature headlined by Blue Diamond Stakes winner Tagaloa, Age of Chivalry, Superstorm and last year’s winner Begood Toya Mother.
Australia’s pre-eminent broadcaster Bruce McAvaney will again lead racing’s best commentary team, which on Saturday features Hamish McLachlan, Katelyn Mallyon and prominent Victorian trainer Henry Dwyer. Jason Richardson and Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs will also be trackside at Caulfield and Randwick respectively, bringing fans all the news and interviews.
Saturday’s other highlights include the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) and The Shorts (1100m) at Randwick, and the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and How Now Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.
