SEVEN wins another week but KARL and ALLY are on the rise

Week 37 delivered another close ratings battle between Seven and Nine.

It was a week that will be remembered as a sad one with many famous faces, and plenty of hard-working production staff departing 10 News First and Studio10.

Key Results

  • Nine was the nb1 primary channel with a 18.8% share.
  • Seven was the nb1 network with a 28% share.
  • 10 finished behind ABC based on network and primary channel data.
  • 7mate was the nb1 multi-channel.
  • Nine won the primary channel share in the key demos of 25-54s and 16-39s.
  • Nine won network share in 25-54s – Seven won network share in 16-39s.
  • Wednesday’s episode of The Bachelor was the most-watched program on streaming catchup platforms

Viewers have made up their minds regarding Plate Of Origin. In its second week, the program declined to a level that guarantees it will not return in 2021.

  • Sunday – 661k national (459k metro)
  • Monday – 592k (393k)
  • Tuesday – 571k (382k)

Sunday night’s room reveal on The Block secured the title of most-watched entertainment program for the week.

  • Sunday (Room Winners) – 1.362mil national (985k metro)
  • Sunday – 1.289mil (924k metro)
  • Monday – 1.036mil (789k)
  • Tuesday – 1.026mil (753k)

The battle at breakfast continues to be fasinating. Sunrise won every morning at breakfast with Monday-Friday averaging 261k metro compared with Today on 232k.

Nine would be extremely happy however with its program winning the all-important east-coast for the fourth week in a row. Today also won across the five capital cities in the key advertising demos of 25-54s and 16-39s.

With David Koch about to take an extended break from Sunrise due to his AFL commitments, It will be very interesting to see if Karl and Ally can continue to build momentum.

The Masked Singer continues to do well for 10. Monday’s episode was the most-watched show for the week in the 16-39 demo. The network also reports live streaming for the reveals on 10play has doubled compared with last year.

  • Monday – 1.086mil (775k)
  • Tuesday (Behind The Scenes) – 825k (592k)

The Bachelor featured ‘love in lockdown’ this week but is still struggling to find the audience 10 would have hoped for.

  • Wednesday – 689k national (549k metro)
  • Thursday – 734k (570k)

Gogglebox on Thursday evening had a national audience of 839k (631k metro) on 10. Very impressive when you consider the episode also delivered a national audience of 172k on Foxtel.

Have You Been Paying Attention was also strong with 1.03 million viewers nationally (764k metro).

Home and Away was the top Australian drama averaging 902k national (547k metro) Monday-Thursday.

In its third week, Halifax Retribution maintained an audience of 719k nationally (505k metro). Those figures are up slightly on the week prior. The episode also secured a VPM catchup audience of 46k on 9Now.

Weekly highlights at the ABC included: Shetland 926k nationally (622k metro), Midsomer Murders 773k (524k), Australian Story 861k (600k), Anh’s Brush with Fame 898k (611k), Further Back In Time For Dinner 805k (535k), Hard Quiz 979k (682k) and Mad As Hell 830k (588k).

The Worlds Most Scenic Railway Journeys secured a Thursday night national audience of 496k (344k metro) on SBS.

7NEWS was the top show nationally every night, with Monday-Friday at 6pm averaging 1.615m national (1.046m metro). 9News won the 6pm battle in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

In its final week of presenting truly local news across the country, 10 News First at 5pm averaged 518,000 viewers nationally (365k metro) across the week.

On Friday evening, as many beloved presenters and even more hard-working crew members across the country signed off for the final time, the bulletin averaged:

  • Sydney – 71k
  • Melbourne – 107k
  • Brisbane – 67k
  • Adelaide – 46k
  • Perth – 59k

From Monday, all 10 News First bulletins will be presented from studios in Sydney and Melbourne.

The Project at 7pm averaged 682,000 viewers nationally. 505,000 capital city viewers.

Friday night’s Geelong vs Richmond AFL match was the top rating sport of the week, scoring an audience of 839k national / 639k metro, including 424k in Melbourne. In the same timeslot, the Panthers v Eels clash secured a national FTA audience of 570,000 (Metro 339k metro) on Nine.
