Emmy winning journalist Elizabeth Vargas fronts this documentary series that relies on her extensive background in investigative reporting.

The former `20/20′ news magazine co-anchor takes an unfiltered look at the often unseen stories of people and events in society that have a profound impact.

In the first episode, Vargas sits down with former Jehovah’s Witness and child sex abuse survivor Romy Maple, as well as a key whistle-blower, Barbara Anderson, to dig deeper into the organisation.

Each episode examines a group such as NXIVM, an organisation that sells ‘self-help’ seminars, through the eyes of past members and gets perspective from believers and leaders who are still active within it.

Joined by former members of controversial organisations, Vargas uncovers how these sects prey upon desperate people to alter their belief systems.

Cults and Extreme Beliefs – Premieres Thursday 11 June at 8:30pm on SBS and SBS OnDemand
