TV Blackbox can reveal Nine has secured the rights to the animated sitcom Duncanville that has just completed its first season in America on Fox.

The series, which will air locally on 9GO, centres on the life of Duncan Harris, an average 15-year-old boy, who is always one step away from making a bad decision.

Duncan lives his mom, a parking enforcement officer, who dreams of being a detective someday and always has to watch Duncan; his dad, who tries to be a better father figure to Duncan than his father was to him; his sister Kimberly, who is a normal teenager going through normal teen-phases; and his other adopted Asian sister Jing, who is an intelligent 5-year-old who is always giving Duncan advice.

In recent interviews, Nine has indicated it would focus on Australian content in favour of overpriced and underperforming international content.

It’s a move that has left Nine broadcasting only a limited number of premiere US content including; Young Sheldon, Manifest, New Amsterdam, Chicago Med and the US version of Survivor. Late-night series Taken has been cancelled and comes to a close next month.

It was therefore interesting to see Nine recently pick up sci-fi series Emergence, which has already been shunted to 9GO for the triple episode burn out strategy. The acquiring of Duncanville is also unlikely to sustain the level of viewership 9GO expects in a prime time Thursday night slot.

TV Blackbox can also confirm 10 has secured new episodes of the US sitcom Mom, with season 6 and the just-completed season 7 set to premiere in Australia soon. Previous seasons have aired in Australia on Nine.

Mom is part of the ViacomCBS family in America, so securing this series would be important to the network and will most likely see it air on 10 Peach. 10 is now the home of most of CBS’s product, however not all CBS shows end up on 10 due to how they are distributed.

Mom is not distributed by CBS International, but rather from Warner Bros who make the program, so it links to a separate deal in this case. This only leaves about a half dozen series that air on CBS broadcast, but do not air on 10 in Australia. These include the US version of The Amazing Race, Magnum PI, SWAT and Young Sheldon.

Mom is set in Napa, California, it follows dysfunctional daughter/mother duo Christy and Bonnie Plunkett, who, after having been estranged for years while both were struggling with addiction, attempt to pull their lives and their relationship together by trying to stay sober and attending Alcoholics Anonymous.

10 have not advised of when Mom will begin.
Duncanville is expected to air the first week of June on 9GO.
