More than 640,000 Australians currently live in public housing.
The waitlist can be up to ten years. People living in public housing are more likely to be 65 or older, with a disability, and a high proportion have experienced domestic violence or homelessness.
In this episode of You Can’t Ask That, we speak to eight Australian’s who live in public housing to ask them the tough questions such as “Why do you get a house for doing nothing?”, and “Where would you be living if you didn’t have this place?”
The award-winning, proudly homegrown ABC TV series You Can’t Ask That is back for a fifth season. In every episode we meet a new group of misunderstood or marginalised Australians answering anonymous, online questions. The fifth season of the original ABC format features the first-person voices of Firefighters, people who are HIV Positive, Kids, people who are on the Autism Spectrum, Nudists, people who have Killed Someone, people who live in Public Housing and Olympic and Paralympic Gold Medallists.
By asking the tough questions and empowering interviewees to answer in their own words with conviction, candour and humour, the series offers searing insights into the lives of Australians whose stories are often dismissed.
