Foxtel remains unfazed by the launch of yet another streaming service into the Australian market.

Yesterday it was revealed BBC Studios would combine forces with UK commercial broadcaster ITV, to deliver Australian fans of UK content a new Subscription Video On-Demand (SVOD) service BritBox later this year.

The announcement of Britbox comes after Foxtel and Fetch TV renewed their long-standing relationships with the BBC last year.

It is expected, pay-tv channels including BBC First, UKTV and BBC Earth will maintain ‘first-run’ access to the impressive library of BBC content. At the same time, BritBox will provide subscribers access to an extensive selection of older BBC library content.

Foxtel’s extended arrangement with the BBC also includes extensive on-demand access to programming. The next few months will see Foxtel launch its own drama-focused SVOD service in Australia featuring premium content from the BBC, along with HBO and FX.

The new Foxtel drama product, currently being developed using the codename ‘Project Jupiter’, is being built on the same technical platform as speciality sports platform Kayo.

’Project Jupiter’ will put the viewer focus towards on-demand viewing, but will also carry ‘live-channels’ of content, allowing Foxtel to utilise its existing pay-tv content licensing agreements to provide a broader range of new content.

BritBox will launch later this year into an already crowded streaming market where it will compete against services including Netflix, Stan, Amazon, Disney+, AppleTV+, and another UK focused provider Acorn TV.
