NRL ON NINE: ROUND 22

DO-OR-DIE FOR BRONCOS AND PANTHERS

With only four weeks of the regular season remaining, it’s crunch time for several clubs still in contention for the finals, with some crucial match-ups this week during NRL Round 22 on Nine.

Tonight on Macca’s Thursday Night Footy, the Sea Eagles and Wests Tigers clash in a vital game for both clubs, who are seeking spots in the top four and top eight respectively.

Manly captain Daly Cherry-Evans is expected to play despite an injury scare, and he’ll be needed against a desperate Tigers side, especially without in-form second-rower Curtis Sironen.

Though missing key players Robbie Farah and Moses Mbye, the wounded Tigers have proven that they are dangerous spoilers against more fancied rivals, and they have already defeated Manly once this season.

VB Friday Night Footy is a crucial game for the Broncos and Panthers, both fighting for the top eight, and a loss could derail the entire season for one of them. Brisbane will feed off their home crowd and bank on Darius Boyd and Anthony Milford to steer them to a win.

Penrith welcome back key playmaker James Maloney, but the battle between the explosive Viliame Kikau and David Fifita could prove the telling blow in what shapes as an ultra-tight contest.

Macca’s Saturday Night Footy returns with a Sydney-based contest between the Rabbitohs – fighting to hold on to a top four spot – and the Bulldogs. Souths get a big boost with the return of the inspirational Sam Burgess and star centre Braidon Burns.

The Bulldogs have proven to be a much tougher challenge than their low ladder position suggests, eking out some hard-fought wins against higher-ranked opponents. They have named the same 17 that toppled the Tigers last week, although Kieran Foran remains an outside chance to return.

Chemist Warehouse Sunday Footy finds the shaky Sharks sitting on the cusp of the top eight and a Dragons outfit determined to dent their finals dreams. The Sharks are almost at full strength with the return of fullback Matt Moylan, but lose mercurial forward Andrew Fifita to injury. St George meanwhile have lost hard man Tariq Sims for the remainder of the season.

The battle between the halves will be enthralling, and might make this a closer contest than expected if the Dragons’ Ben Hunt and Gareth Widdop can find their mojo.
