State of Origin scores for Nine

Wednesday nights State of Origin clash confirmed its position as a ratings giant in the Australian TV landscape with the highest ratings of any TV program shown in Australia this year, including such luminaries as Married at First Sight and the Australian Open finals. It is so far, the top rating rating program for the year in both Sydney and Brisbane with 950,000 and 746,000 average viewers respectively.

Game 1 of the 2019 Origin series had a peak audience of 3.638 million and a national average audience of 3.207 million viewers with 2.178 million tuning in from the metro areas and 1.029 million in the regions.

The national average audience was down 7% (241,000) on the 2018 series opener, and is the 14th highest Game 1 audience since 2001. Since 2001, the record audience for Game 1 is still the 2014 figure of 4.055 million.

The biggest decrease was in Melbourne where figures dropped 23% (85,000) on last year.  In Sydney, the audience decreased by 35,000, while in Brisbane the drop was just 19,000 and Adelaide audiences dropped 8,000. And Perth was down 21,000. Regional areas also took a small hit, down 74,000.

The match was a Channel Nine exclusive event, the match was not broadcast on Foxleague or Kayo.

All eyes now move to Perth for the next event on Sunday June 23rd from Optus Stadium.
