Peter Stefanovic has landed a new breakfast TV hosting gig as the respected journalist looks to relaunch his media career after being dumped by NINE at the end of 2018.

The former host of Weekend Today will soon take on the presenting FIRST EDITION on SKY NEWS alongside existing popular host Laura Jayes

Stefanovic joined the SKY NEWS team in February and has been working on a documentary for the channel telling the inside story of the Lawyer X police scandal in Victoria.

The new breakfast hosting gig will see Stefanovic once again working with Mark Calvert. The former TODAY show executive producer is now the Head of Programming at SKY and has been given the task of raising the capabilities of the channel.

Stefanovic had worked at NINE for fifteen years in roles that included US and Europe foreign correspondent and reporter for 60 MINUTES before being let go by NINE at the end of 2018 when his contract expired.

It was a spectacular fall from grace for Stefanovic who the favourite was once to replace his famous brother Karl at TODAY.

His very public marriage to Sylvia Jeffreys, added fuel to the fire and many thought the pair would end up as a husband-and-wife team fronting the show.

But then there was Ubergate.

The fact Peter had his phone on speaker while bitching about colleagues did not go down well with his bosses and with Karl’s power diminishing at the network after bad headlines and bad ratings, Peter was no longer protected.

Speaking with The Daily Telegraph, Stefanovic reflected on the series of events that lead to his departure from NINE;

“it’s embarrassing and I felt responsible and ashamed for a lot of what happened. Not just because of the damage I might have caused to my employer, but also to my family as well.”

Peter Stefanovic will join FIRST EDITION on SKY NEWS from July 1
