Triple J have announced that Tom Tilley is leaving the the youth radio network in mid-December to take on an enhanced role at 10’s THE PROJECT. This follows the announcement that Hamish McDonald is focusing on his new Q&A hosting role with the ABC.
After eight years as the host of Hack, triple j’s youth issues and current affairs program, Tom Tilley wraps up at the end of the year to pursue a role at 10 and other new opportunities. His role at the ABC has seen Tom interview Prime Ministers from both sides of politics, Sir David Attenborough and countless world leaders. He’s kept young Australians informed week in and week out and established his own catch phrase, ‘Let’s Talk!’.
Tom says of his time at triple j:
“Hack has taken me further than my wildest dreams, from a naive triple j listener in the paddocks of Mudgee to interviewing the country’s most powerful people. While grilling ministers live on radio was a lot of fun and often necessary, my proudest moments are our conversations about mental health. Allowing young people around Australia to open up, realise they’re not alone in their struggle and then push our politicians to do more, is something that brings me to tears when I think about it.
Now after twelve years at triple j and eight years hosting Hack, it’s time to let another passionate young journo take the reins and for me to explore new exciting opportunities. From the bottom of my heart thank you to all the producers, reporters, managers, mentors, friends and family who’ve helped this country boy’s dreams come true.”
Tom’s contributor role with The Project will increase as Hamish McDonald’s role decreases now that he has been named the new host of ABC’s Q&A program. A Network 10 spokes person said:
“Tom Tilley will remain a contributor to The Project, as he always has been.”
Tom has also signed his first publishing deal with ABC Books.
Before he goes fans will have plenty of time to for a proper send-off as Tom continues in his role at triple j through to mid-December.
Triple J will announce their 2020 presenter line-up later this week.
