A one-sided contest has delivered the lowest audience for 26 years for the 2019 AFL Grand Final.

An average national audience of 2.939 Million tuned in to witness the Richmond Tigers demolish the Western Sydney Giants by 89 points in their first Grand Final appearance.

The figure is the lowest on record for an AFL Grand Final since national (metro+regional) figures started being recorded in 2003

The match, which was effectively over by half-time, was watched by an average 5-City metro audience of just 2.197 Million viewers. That’s the lowest metro audience for a Grand Final since 1993 when just 2.171 Million tuned in for Essendon defeating Carlton.

Richmond vs Giants – 5 City Average Figures 2019

  • Melbourne – 991k

  • Sydney – 372k

  • Brisbane – 317k

  • Adelaide – 232k

  • Perth – 286k

  • Regional – 741k

The national peak audience for yesterday’s match was 3.313 million (2.419mil 5-City Metro). Also considerably down on last year’s 4.297 million (3.257mil metro)

The disappointing result will no doubt renew calls from broadcasters to move the event into a twilight timeslot to boost viewership numbers.

Yesterday’s match was considerably lower than last year’s nail-biting finale between Collingwood and West Coast. The 2018 contest delivered an average national audience of 3.378 Million (2.601mil 5-City Metro).

Richmond’s previous victory in the 2017 Grand Final delivered Seven an average national audience of 3.524 Million (2.680mil 5-City Metro). The Tigers contest versus Adelaide Crows peaked at 4.173 Million.

Seven had hoped the 2019 Grand Final, featuring teams from Australia’s two largest cities would deliver a ratings bump for the broadcast.

In 2012, the Sydney Swans defeated Hawthorn. The match remains as the highest rating Grand Final in the past ten years with an average national audience of 4.415 Million (3.196mil 5-City Metro). The audience for that day included 740,000 viewers in Sydney.

The 2016 Grand Final between the Western Bulldogs and Sydney Swans also delivered a ratings spike, with an average national audience of 4.089 Million (3.039mil 5-City Metro) including 534,000 viewers in Sydney.

  1. No-one in western Sydney cares about GWS, that’s why. Look at the difference between the Swans ratings and GWS.

Western Sydney is a football (soccer) and NRL town. AFL should give it up and move em out.

  2. The biggest drop seems to be from Melbourne, although Sydney was down also, so GWS factor definitely played a part.

Perhaps a simplistic view but is this a case of the bigger the ‘event’ for a Melbourne audience, the fewer people will be watching at home?

Rating peaks seem to happen when there is a small-mid size AFL club playing an interstate club. I doubt people are busting to get to a pub or go to a public event to watch Sydney vs. the Bulldogs but Richmond/Collingwood being involved gets a greater level of excitement to the city.

  3. Everyone is looking at the incorrect ratings, the TV ratings were down correct. Because of the streaming services were up 334% combine the TV & Streaming, the 2019 Grand Final is up 21% The AFL is very happy. Also Amazon Streaming & Netflix have been in contact with the AFL for future AFL Streaming rights.
