SPORTS RATINGS WRAP | State Of Origin, Wimbledon and Cricket World Cup all delivering big winter audiences for Australian networks

With another Origin series over, the Cricket World Cup nearing its apex, the Women’s Football World Cup over and the Netball World Cup about to start, the domestic NRL and AFL seasons continue to move towards the end of their 2019 seasons with 2 months left before finals.

The highest rating sporting event of the week was obviously Origin with 2.881 million viewers on Nine. The largest audience on the weekend was Fridays AFL Hawks/Pies clash at the MCG with 922,000 viewers across Fox Footy and Seven. It was also the highest FTA event with 694,000 viewers.

The highest drawing pay tv event of the weekend was Saturday nights Knights/ with 260,000 tuning in to the action across the country.

State of Origin

Origin III rated 2.881 million on Nine across the country, finishing ahead of 2018s 3rd game (2.683m), but still well behind the 2013 game 3 that reached over 4 million.

The 2019 Origin series reached over 9 million viewers, with 9.537 million people turning in across the country on Nine over the course of the series.

At the time of writing, State of Origin matches occupy the top 3 ratings positions on Australian television in 2019.

NRL

A shortened round 16 with just 4 matches saw 2.515 million people watch professional league across the weekend. More than 57 million people have watched this year premiership season at an average of 476,000 viewers per match. Total rugby league viewing for the season (including preseason, Origins and Rep round) now exceeds 68 million in 2019.

The highest rating NRL game of the weekend was Friday nights Tigers/Roosters clash with 813,000 viewers on Foxleague and the Nine network nationally. The game was also the highest on Nine with 555,000 viewers opting for free to air coverage.

Saturday nights Knights/Warriors affair was the highest draw on Foxleague with 260,000 tuning in to the action across the country.

Thursday and Friday night matches both rated 12,000 on Oztams VPM charts for the week.

The Canterbury cup was watched by 51,000 in Sydney, while the Intrust Cup attracted 27,000 in Brisbane, as state league ratings continue to lift in the absence of Netball coverage on Nine.

AFL

Round 16 of the AFL season had 3.3 million people tune in on the Seven Network and Foxtel. More than 65 million viewers have watched the season to date, at an average of 485,000 per game. Total AFL viewing across the year has passed 71 million viewers (including AFLX, AFLW, and the JLT series).

The highest rating AFL match for the weekend was Fridays Hawks/Pies clash at the MCG with 922,000 viewers across Foxfooty and Seven. It was the highest drawing match on the Seven network with 694,000 people tuning in on 7 and 7mate. It was also the big draw for the AFL on Fox with 215,000 viewers turning in to Fox Footy.

The Showdown in Adelaide made the Oztam VPM list with 14,000.

Saturdays SANFL and WAFL rated 20,000 and 40,000 respectively on Saturday, while Sundays VFL rated 33,000.

Cricket

Saturdays Australia v South Africa clash rated 101,000 on Foxtel, with the first session rating 205,000 on Nine.

Also at the world cup, India v New Zealand rated 344,000 on Nine for session 1, and 140,000 on Fox. The second part rated 254,000 on GEM, 200,000 on Foxtel.

Supercars

Friday’s Supercars from Townsville rated 49,000 on Foxtel.

On Saturday, V8 racing pulled in 153,000 viewers to Townsville. 10 of the Foxtel top 20 for Saturday was motorsport program and 9 of those were V8 related – suggesting that Foxtel’s foray into the V8s is going pretty well.

The V8s in Townsville rated 178,000 on Foxtel on Sunday – the second highest rating Foxtel program on Sunday, while half the Foxtel top 20 was Supercars related programming.

Tennis

Wimbledon Day 5 rated 135,000 and 133,000 on 7TWO.

Wimbledon Day 6 rated 217,000 and 183,000 on 7TWO

Wimbledon Day 7 rated 520,000 on the 7 network.

Wimbledon Day 8 rated 148,000 and 146,000 on 7TWO.

Other Motorsport

On 10 Bold, the Moto GP rated 129,000.

Saturdays World Superbike championship attracted 118,000.

Super Rugby

Saturdays Super Rugby final between the Crusaders and Jaguares rated 81,000.

 

Netball

Starting July 12th, Channel 9 will broadcast all the Australian Diamonds matches at the 2019 Netball World Cup in Liverpool. Every match of the Netball World Cup will be accessible via 9Now.

Football

Perth Glory will take on Manchester United at Optus Stadium on July 13th – and that action will all be broadcast on 7TWO.

beIN SPORTS has announced that it will broadcast Western Sydney’s historic first match back at Bankwest Stadium, against English giant Leeds United. The match will be available in Australia via beIN SPORTS CONNECT, Foxtel, Foxtel NOW, Fetch and KAYO.
