What's New In Streaming For The Next Seven Days

Streaming Guide December 14 – December 20

Roma (Netflix, December 14)

When you read the next sentence, you’ll wonder if this is still a streaming guide – it is. See Roma in the cinema if you have the chance. Roma is Alfonso Cuarón’s (Gravity, Children of Men) latest film, and Netflix has been rolling out the film in theatres for the past few weeks prior to its streaming release. Inspired by his childhood, Roma follows Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), the nanny to a middle-class family in Mexico City. Cleo is based on Cuarón’s childhood nanny Libora “Libo” Rodríguez, and you’ll want to read all about her once you’ve seen this beautiful film.

No Activity: The Night Before Christmas (Stan, December 14)

The AACTA winning and Logie nominated series returns for a festive one-off special, following Detectives Hendy and Stokes (Patrick Brammall and Darren Gilshenan) on their latest police assignment, this time with a seasonal twist. Tasked with a Christmas Eve stakeout, the pair monitor the scene from their parked car as a disgruntled Santa Claus holds a group of innocent Christmas shoppers hostage inside a suburban shopping mall. This is why you shouldn’t leave your Christmas shopping until the last minute. Now I need to follow my own advice.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale (Netflix, December 14)

As the winter solstice approaches, Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka, Mad Men) orchestrates an emotional séance with serious consequences, and Susie’s merry plans turn menacing. We can only hope that this is where the Riverdale cross-over comes in.

American Woman: Season 1 (Stan, December 14)

As soon as I finished the first episode of this new show starring Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) as single mother Bonnie Nolan, I queued up the second. Based on the life of Real Housewives star Kyle Richards, this timely dramedy is set against the backdrop of second-wave feminism in the Seventies.

Disney Collection (Stan, December 14)

Stan announced yesterday that they’d made a deal with Disney to bring some of their best live-action and animated content to streaming in Australia. This includes movies and television shows from across all of Disney’s studios including Pixar, Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios. Finally, you can stream all (at least most) of the Marvel films in one place for your pre-Avengers: Endgame (a ridiculous title) marathon, as well as finally watch the new DuckTales. Cancel all your plans, you have a lot to watch.

Schitt’s Creek: Christmas Special (Netflix, December 19)

Johnny (Eugene Levy) is hoping to ring in the holidays with a traditional Rose Christmas party like they used to. However, getting everyone to participate it will be easier said than done. Besides, where would they hold it? The motel isn’t quite the same as the mansion they used to own.
