Narcos: Mexico (Netflix, November 16)

Narcos: Mexico explores the origins of the modern drug war by returning to its roots, beginning at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganised confederation of independent growers and dealers. Witness the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s as Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna) takes the helm, unifying traffickers in order to build an empire. When DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña) moves his wife and young son from California to Guadalajara to take on a new post, he quickly learns that his assignment will be more challenging than he imagined.

Escape at Dannemora: Season 1, Episode 1 (Stan, November 19)

This new series is based on the stranger-than-fiction prison break in upstate New York in the summer of 2015. The escape of two convicted murderers, aided by a female prison employee who reportedly carried on affairs with both men, spawned a state-wide manhunt. The limited series stars Academy Award Winners Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) and Golden Globe nominee Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) and is executive produced and directed by Emmy winner Ben Stiller.

Fresh Blood (ABC iView, November 20)

Four pilots produced through the ABC and Screen Australia’s Fresh Blood initiative will drop on iview next Tuesday. This year’s pilots are Koala Man, ABC’s first adult animated comedy about a divorced dad with a superhero alter-ego; Why Are You Like This, a sitcom about 20-something best friends in Melbourne; The Angus Project, a story about an aspiring sports journalist with cerebral palsy; and Be Your Own Boss, which follows small business owners that are the recipients of local government grants.

My Brilliant Friend: Episode 1 (Foxtel, November 20)

Based on the best-selling novel by Elena Ferrante, My Brilliant Friend tells the story of Elena Greco, a now-elderly woman who discovers the most important friend in her life, Raffaella “Lila” Cerullo, seems to have disappeared without a trace. Greco turns to her computer and starts writing the story of their tempestuous friendship, starting from the point where Elena met Lila in their first year of primary school in 1950.

The Teach: Season 2 (SBS On Demand, November 22)

Acclaimed crime thriller The Teach returns, embarking on a new storyline as teacher Pawel Zawadzki (Maciej Stuhr) finds himself forced to take up a new job at an elite high school in Wroclaw. A few days after he joins, a tragic event takes place at the school – leaving many questions, but no answers. As he begins to investigate, Pawel discovers that the school’s prestigious façade may be a deceptive illusion.

No Activity (U.S.): Season 2 (Stan, November 22)

Patrick Brammall and Tim Meadows will reprise their roles as Detectives Nick Cullen and Judd Tollbeck in the U.S. adaptation of Stan’s first original series. Season two finds us back in Car 27 with Cullen and Tolbeck on a new stakeout. Meanwhile, the SDPD is rocked by a corruption scandal and the culprit may be close to home. Returning guest stars include Jake Johnson, Amy Sedaris and F. Murray Abraham, as Chris Gethard, Max Greenfield and Cristin Milioti join the cast, among others.
