Foxtel’s highly promoted new streaming service Foxtel Now has failed at the first hurdle, with 1000’s of customers locked out from viewing the highly anticipated Game Of Thrones premiere as the service struggled to deal with the load.

Foxtel Now is the latest streaming product attempt by the pay-tv company as it looks to more closely compete with rivals such as Netflix, Amazon and Stan.

The technical issues commenced around 8pm when a large number of new and existing subscribers accessed the service hoping to enjoy the new episode. Customers have also been left angry at the lack of communication from Foxtel’s social media and support teams.

A spokesperson for Foxtel confirmed the technical issues telling DeciderTV,

“there was huge pressure placed on the system.”

“The problem did not arise due to the number of streams, rather the number of people signing up to Now and cable and satellite customers upgrading their packages.”

The spokesperson added:

“We are devastated that some customers experienced technical issues tonight. As was the case in the U.S. and Latin America, the unprecedented rush for a subscription just prior to the telecast, crashed the system. Foxtel engineers are working through the night to resolve the issue.

It’s most unfortunate and we apologise to those affected. We are committed to resolving the technical faults immediately and together with our broadcast partners around the world, we are giving this the same degree of priority.

We assure anyone impacted that they will be able to watch the first episode of Season 7 either On Demand or via one of our encore screenings throughout the week. We will continue to communicate with affected customers to ensure they are fully informed,”

Foxtel relaunched it’s streaming service in June with a new pricing model that promised customers access to the Game of Thrones season 7 premiere, and many other HBO dramas, in HD, for an entry-level price of $15 per month.

Foxtel Now launched with the ability to stream content to the big screen via Google Chromecast. And also delivered a much-needed HD streaming upgrade on select devices (PC/Mac via Google Chrome browser, Telstra TV, Playstation 4, and Chromecast.)
