One hundred years after women played their first game of football, the passionate, devoted and deserving female players now have a league of their own in the AFL.
League of Her Own celebrates the rise of women’s football in Australia whilst capturing the struggles faced along the way.
Following the first ever AFL Women’s game, the documentary follows the journey of three players, Moana Hope, Stephanie Chiocci and Tayla Thorn along with other influential people who pushed for this dream to come true for all Australian women.
Despite the setbacks, Chiocci has never given up on her dream. Chiocci played for local club Diamond Creek for 10 years, not knowing if she would ever get the chance to advance to the AFL.
League of Her Own depicts Chiocci’s inspirational and moving journey as she goes from local club football, to waiting for her name to be called at the first AFL Women’s draft.
Hope’s journey has also been far from simple. When she was young, like many other female footballers, Hope was told she could no longer pursue her passion for football. Running through life facing a number of hardships, Hope never gave up on her dream of the big league. Now, she has been selected as a forward for the Collingwood Football Club in the inaugural 2017 AFL draft after an amazing season in the VFL kicking over 100 goals for the St Kilda Sharks.
League of Her Own, presented by Angela Pippos, also travels to the top end where NT hopeful Tayla Thorn awaits answers of her AFL destiny whilst also aiming to be a role model and inspiration for her community.
History has been made in 2017 and Australian women no longer have to worry about having equal opportunity in football. League of Her Own tells the story of the stigma and non-inclusive nature surrounding women’s football in light of their great success in launching the first AFL Women’s season this year.
Seven will broadcast the first AFL Women’s match this Friday nationally, then every Saturday Night as well as the Grand Final LIVE and exclusive Saturday March 25.
League of Her Own is produced and directed by multi-award winning producer Nicole Minchin and sports journalist and author Angela Pippos.
