Contemporary thriller Thirteen, starring Jodie Comer (Doctor Foster), Aneurin Barnard (War and Peace) and Natasha Little (The Night Manager), premieres on BBC First from July 31 at 8.30pm.

UK audiences were gripped by the series when it launched as youth channel BBC Three’s first original online drama earlier this year. The series dominated BBC iPlayer for BBC Three’s first month as an online-only service, coming second only to BBC One drama The Night Manager, with over 1.8 million views for its opening episode.

Writer Marnie Dickens says:

“There are lots of stories of real life imprisonment but it wasn’t so much those that interested me, it was more what happens afterwards. A lot of focus is put on periods of imprisonment and I wondered what happens when someone does miraculously escape, and how it can’t possibly be happily ever after.”

Jodie Comer, recently seen as mistress Kate Parks in hit British drama Doctor Foster, stars as 26-year-old Ivy Moxam, who stumbles out into the street after 13 years in captivity.

Ivy’s captor is on the run, and she isn’t safe. Assigned to the case are DI Elliott Carne and DI Lisa Merchant. Their bond is more than professional, but it begins to break as Carne is drawn closer to Ivy.

Then cracks appear in Ivy’s account of her ordeal, and they start to doubt her motives. Beneath her childlike façade, she’s become a strong-willed woman. What happened to Ivy in that cellar? How has it changed her? And can she be trusted?

Written by rising star Marnie Dickens, the critically-acclaimed Thirteen explores how to pick up the threads of a life half-lived and how to survive as a family under the greatest pressure. How to feel again, chance love again. A psychological drama about who to trust when you can’t even trust yourself. Ivy Moxam is a young girl. Ivy Moxam is a woman. Ivy Moxam is whoever you want her to be.

Starring Jodie Comer (Doctor Foster), Natasha Little (The Night Manager, Wolf Hall), Stuart Graham (Hunger), Richard Rankin (From Darkness), Valene Kane (The Fall) Aneurin Barnard (War and Peace) and Katherine Rose Morley (Last Tango in Halifax).

Thirteen premieres on BBC First on July 31 at 8.30pm.
