Netflix to produce 12 new episodes of Charlie Brooker’s cult series Black Mirror @NetflixANZ

Fan’s of Charlie Brooker’s acclaimed, mind-bending anthology series Black Mirror are in for a treat with international SVOD provider Netflix confirming it will produce an all-new 12 episode season of the show. 

Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, who executive produced the first seven episodes of the series, will continue to serve as executive producers and showrunners for the new episodes. Brooker has commenced writing the new episodes, which are scheduled to begin production in late 2015 from the series’ production base in the UK.

The original episodes of Black Mirror have generated significant buzz in the US, since becoming available on Netflix earlier this year.

Premiere dates and episode rollout will be announced at a later date. The series will premiere in all Netflix territories including Australia at the same time, except for the UK and Ireland, where the production company in negotiating a separate broadcast deal.

While the original episodes had there Australian premiere on SBS, Netflix is unlikely to negotiate a local FTA deal for the new episodes.

“It’s all very exciting — a whole new bunch of Black Mirror episodes on the most fitting platform imaginable. Netflix connects us with a global audience so that we can create bigger, stranger, more international and diverse stories than before, whilst maintaining that ‘Black Mirror’ feel. I just hope none of these new story ideas come true,” said Brooker.

Without questioning it, technology has transformed all aspects of our lives; in every home; on every desk; in every palm – a plasma screen; a monitor; a Smartphone – a Black Mirror reflecting our 21st Century existence back at us. The series has been recognized with an international Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, a Rose D’Or and been nominated for a Bafta® award.
