Joss Whedon, the creative genius behind the feature film “Marvel’s The Avengers,” one of the highest grossing films of all time, has co-created “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” a dynamic, action-packed one-hour drama that brings back Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) to lead a team of highly skilled agents to investigate extra-normal and super human people and events worldwide. The movie length premiere is this Wednesday night on Seven and here at Nelbie we asked Simeon to take a look at the first episode, here is what he thought.
When I
decided to watch the pilot episode of Marvel’s Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D., I had
mixed feelings about it. I expected some new post-modern trash that will make
me leave it alone after the first episode. I have never been so wrong about a
series and now I am looking forward to watching the second episode ‘0-8-4’ and
hope it will be ever more perfect than the pilot. Let me share with you what I
liked about the series and why I intend on watching it in the future (as for
what I didn’t like, I cannot think of).
The Plot
Marvel’s
Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and
Logistic Division – a governmental organization dealing with people with
special abilities) takes us in the ‘New World’ – the world after the Battle for
New York. The first thing that will strike you is that the series makes bold
connections with other series and current hot topics – The Avengers, Iron Man,
Harry Potter, etc. And creates a whole new world. So we see S.H.I.E.L.D. and
its agents going after a man who has adopted special superpowers in a
mysterious way. On their way there they come across Skye – a beautiful woman
not afraid to put herself in the centre of the events, trying to contact and
work with super heroes. So, in short, the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. find the man
and neutralize him (he was going to explode just like in Iron Man 3), but their
job is not done – they need to find the people in charge, who run the so-called
‘Centipede Project’ and try to find a way to turn people in army of
super-humans. It may sound a little messy now – just watch the Pilot and
everything will come in order.
What I like about the series?
Marvel’s Agents
of S.H.I.E.L.D. offered me a lot of things that I like. To begin with, they are
trying to explain everything supernatural with science, so it doesn’t look just
like the stereotypical science fiction series. Then comes the new technologies
– flying cars, robots, ultra-fast planes, advanced telecommunications and much
more – everything I want to see in the real world, which is not going to happen
soon.
Moreover, I
think that the characters are exactly the number they need to be – enough to
develop the plot, not so much to become overcrowded. In my opinion, the crew is
chosen to perfectly match their characters – we see the 007-style Agent
Coulson, the strong female Agent May, the bad boy Agent Ward, the attractive
Skye who is expected to become a part of the team (I also expect some romance
between Skye and Ward), and the geeky scientists Agents Fitz and Simmons.
What else I
like about the series is that it conveys a strong moral from the very
beginning. It literary says ‘However hard you present is, don’t make
compromises with yourself – don’t choose the easy way, don’t lose your
humanity!’ And in the Pilot we see that the S.H.I.E.L.D.S. works in a humane
way – when told that there’s no way but to kill the man with the super powers,
Agent Coulson gets angry and shouts ‘Never tell me there’s no way!’.
Why I will continue to watch Marvel’s Agents of Shield?
Because I
want to see more new technologies and geeky stuff; because I want to understand
something more about the past of Agent Coulson (who also appeared in The
Avengers and a number of other productions); because I want to find out who is
carrying out the ‘Centipede Project’; because I want to see what will happen
between Skye and Ward; because I really enjoyed the Pilot.
Seriously,
this series is different – it takes the mystery from Dr. Who, the supernatural
from HEROES, the action from Arrow, the comedy moments of Chandler from
FRIENDS, the strong characters from Dr. House. It really has what to offer, so
I am sticking to it. What’s more, I highly recommend it to anyone who is into
something new, exciting and really well done – not so many series nowadays can
grip you from the beginning.
