PETE EVANS to tell Australians the “truth” about COVID-19 – This weekend on 60 Minutes

Just who is hoodwinking who?

There’s no doubt COVID-19 has caused great uncertainty in the world, but does that mean we should now ignore the scientists, doctors and even politicians who are fighting to figure out ways to beat the virus?

Well yes, if you believe an increasing number of increasingly angry people who are convinced coronavirus is nothing more than a sinister plot to control their lives. But what do these conspiracy theorists know that we don’t, and why do so many people listen to them?

Liz Hayes speaks with Australians, including the controversial celebrity Pete Evans, who are sick of being told what to do by the government and other authorities. Evans tells Hayes he fears for his safety and thinks he could be targeted because he’s so outspoken. Ominously he warns,

“If I disappear or I have a fricking weird accident, it wasn’t an accident, okay?”

JESSE JACKSON

Sadly, the explosion of violence and unrest in the United States this past week is nothing new. And no one knows that better than the Reverend Jesse Jackson. These days he is America’s most revered civil rights leader.

In the 1960s he protested against injustice alongside Dr Martin Luther King Jr, and tragically witnessed his assassination. In the 1980s Rev Jackson twice ran for the American presidency.

He was unsuccessful, but in an exclusive interview with 60 MINUTES, Liam Bartlett asks Jesse Jackson to dream about what the United States would be like today if he had been elected.

POISONED

For any parent, the first cry of their newborn child is the most anticipated and glorious sound imaginable.

It certainly was for Benish and Danial Khan when their daughter Amelia came into the world at a Sydney hospital. Within minutes of being born though, everything changed and the baby was fighting for her life. But it wasn’t because she was unhealthy.

There had been a catastrophic bungle at the hospital. Unknown to the doctors and nurses, when they gave Amelia what they thought was oxygen to help her breathing, they were in fact poisoning her with another gas.

On assignment for 60 MINUTES, Nine News reporter Chris O’Keefe investigates an unforgiveable case of medical negligence.

Why isn’t NINE airing the American BACHELOR franchise?

Fans of the popular reality TV series are furious they cannot watch the romantic competition legally here in Australia.

Although Foxtel has emerged as the winner of new Warner Bros television content in Australia, the international distributor continues to work with all networks with existing television shows such as Blindspot with Seven, Mom with 10 and Young Sheldon with Nine.

In a mystery to viewers (and perhaps even a mystery to Warner Bros’ themselves), Nine continues to license the American versions of The Bachelor, The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise from the production company, but have chosen not to screen them on any platform.

The series is not even played in a lunch time slot, a graveyard slot or on 9 Now.

Australian fans of the local series are desperate to watch the international versions, but cannot do so legally. Some in the industry are stumped during this advertising slump as to why Nine would pay money for the rights but then not screen them, as they do with the US version of Survivor.

Recently Nine announced they would no longer rely on low rating American content and would not involve themselves in paying a premium for US content that does not rate here.

There’s no doubt Foxtel or 10 would be keen for that content and fans would love the chance to watch it legally because ultimately it’s the fans that miss out!

*Nine declined to comment

AFL is returning and the SUNDAY FOOTY SHOW is back at 10am

Set your alarms: the original and the best Sunday Footy Show is returning to its 10.00am timeslot with a brand new set this Sunday on Nine and 9Now.

The Sunday Footy Show panel – Tony Jones, Billy Brownless, Matthew Lloyd, Nathan Brown, Kane Cornes and Damian Barrett – are all hyped up because this is the last Sunday with no footy and they can’t wait to bring viewers the best in AFL news and laughs.

Joining the panel is legendary coach Denis Pagan, who enters TJ’s Time Capsule as this week’s special guest. The two-time premiership coach with North Melbourne will take a look back at the 1996 Grand Final.

Melbourne young gun and barbecue onion enthusiast Angus Brayshaw will appear live to tell us about the Demons’ training program in iso and how they are preparing for their Round 2 clash with Carlton.

Lloydy’s Deep Dive will once again explore what would have been in the Round 12 match-ups, including Adelaide v Western Bulldogs. In 2015, these two sides faced off in the Elimination Final that led to the relationship breakdown of Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge and Damo. Also, for North Melbourne v Richmond, we remember what happened in 2003 when Jason McCartney made a heroic return to the AFL – only to announce his retirement straight after his first game back. TJ, who was closely involved, will revisit this emotional moment.

Billy’s List reveals the greatest haircut of all time – can Warwick Capper go back-to-back after winning last week’s poll? And with the induction of West Coast Eagles rookie pick Dean Cox into the AFL Hall of Fame during the week, the panellists will nominate who they believe to be the greatest ever rookie selection and throw it open for another audience poll.

Browny’s Quiz returns with Sportsbet giving home viewers the chance to win $500 every week.

And three of the AFL’s best analysers – Lloyd, Brown and Cornes – will preview the big matches coming up in Round 2.

Plus, Vol-Kane-O and What Caught My Eye.

The critically-acclaimed documentary IN MY BLOOD IT RUNS screens in July on ABC

Told through the eyes of charismatic 10-year-old Arrernte/Garrwa boy Dujuan and his family, the film charts the challenges Dujuan faces both in his school and on the streets of Alice Springs.

In his community Dujuan is recognised as a child-healer and a hunter. He speaks three languages, yet despite his depth of wisdom and intelligence, Dujuan is failing in school and facing increasing scrutiny from welfare and the police.  As he travels perilously close to incarceration, his family fight to give him a strong Arrente education alongside his western education.  We walk with him as he grapples with these pressures, shares his truths and somewhere in-between finds space to dream, imagine and hope for his future.

In My Blood It Runs reveals the complexities First Nations communities face negotiating colonisation whilst maintaining their cultural identities and practices through self-determination, the revitalisation of languages and connection to Country. It is a deeply moving insight into a side of Australia rarely depicted on screen.

Directed by Maya Newell. Produced by Sophie Hyde, Rachel Naninaaq Edwardson, Larissa Behrendt, Maya Newell.  Collaborating Directors: Dujuan Hoosan, Carol Turner, Megan Hoosman, James Mawson, Margaret Anderson, Jimmy Mawson. Associate Producer, Lisa Sherrard and Alex Kelly. Executive Producer/Senior Traditional Owner of Alice Springs, Felicity Hayes. Advisors, Margaret Kemarre Turner, Mrs Abbott Perrule, William Tilmouth, Ameila Turner and Jane Vadiveloo with partner organisations Children’s Ground and Akeyuelrre Healing Centre Production company, Closer Productions.  In My Blood It Runs was developed and funded via GoodPitch Australia through Documentary Australia Foundation, and received principal production investment and development funding from Screen Australia. Heather Ewart returns Monday as BACK ROADS embarks on more big adventures

ABC’s much-loved series Back Roads returns this winter travelling to more of Australia’s remote regions and towns.

In season 6 the popular show will visit regions including Rokewood (Vic), Biloela (Qld), Penguin (Tas), Girgaree  (Vic),  Dampier  Peninsula  (WA)  and  Omeo  (Vic).  So,  embrace your spirit of adventure and join Heather Ewart and guest presenters Paul West and Lisa Millar as they discover the amazing people living life just off the back roads of Australia.

First stop is the  Nullarbor Plain. Heather travels across the mighty Nullarbor and discovers why people are drawn to this remote landscape – and why they stay.

Travelling from Penong in South Australia to the border of Western Australia, Heather finds windmills, beautiful minerals and pink lakes. She meets a truck driver with three decades on the Stuart Highway and a cyclist who’s been on it for weeks!

Where the road hits the coast, Heather visits the towns created when access was only by sea, stopping to marvel at the migrating whales in the beautiful Fowlers Bay. But it’s far from the barren wasteland the name Nullarbor, or the land of no trees, suggests.

There’s medicine to be made from desert plants, which is “better than tablets” according to Anangu elder Mima Smart, and there’s natural wonder with the world’s longest run of uninterrupted cliffs, best viewed from the air after taking off from the iconic Nullarbor Roadhouse.

It’s a place that offers not only a unique way of life but also a deep connection to the land, from both those born on country to people from the other side of the world.

So, join Heather as she chases the endless horizon on the road from Penong westwards, discovering big skies, big seas, big animals, big machines and big characters.

Back Roads travels to more of Australia’s most remote regions and towns. So embrace your spirit of adventure and join Heather Ewart as she discovers the amazing people living life just off the back roads of Australia.

Production details: Executive Producer, Brigid Donovan. Story Producer, Damian Estall.

Back Roads, Series 6 premieres Monday June 8 at 8pm on ABC

Seven News breaches privacy and impartiality rules

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has found Channel Seven News Brisbane breached privacy and impartiality rules.

The breaches occurred during two news programs which related to the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC), broadcast on 30 and 31 July 2019.

An ACMA investigation found there was a breach of the privacy of two QBCC staff members. The news story on 30 July 2019 contained images of their names, job titles and signatures which was unnecessary and not in the public interest.

The investigation also found Seven News Brisbane was not fair and impartial in its presentation of allegations on 31July of QBCC’s handling of a customer complaint.

ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin said broadcasters need to adhere to the regulations set out in their relevant codes of practice.

“The Commercial Television Code of Practice has clear definitions of what is acceptable to broadcast. Channel Seven News Brisbane failed to meet its obligations under the Code,”

“By failing to give the QBCC the opportunity to respond to the allegations aired in the 31 July news story, it failed to present the news fairly and impartially.”

Seven News Brisbane will circulate a copy of the ACMA’s finding to news editorial staff within Seven Brisbane and include the decision and its reasoning in its staff Code training.

Given Seven’s record of code compliance, the ACMA considers those actions are sufficient remedial actions in the circumstances.

In the lead up to the launch special on Sunday night, Discovery will air the 2-hour documentary, NASA & SpaceX: Journey To The Future on Saturday 13 June 8:30pm which charts the incredible journey to the launch. With unprecedented and exclusive access to NASA and the SpaceX headquarters, the documentary gives viewers a rare glimpse inside Launch Control and first-hand accounts from SpaceX Founder and Chief Engineer Elon Musk, Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley and NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. NASA & SpaceX: Journey To The Future reveals the behind-the-scenes action with the teams of SpaceX engineers, NASA employees and scientists as they fulfill the SpaceX mission to “fly, test, and fix” their way to the ISS – with the goal of eventually flying to the moon and to Mars.
